Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if that's her parents copy and she just went "well it's in my house so it's mine too." My dad owned copies of Universal Monsters and old B movies, including some shitty anime called "Attack of the Super Monsters." My brother and I used to watch them all the time. My brother is a massive home video sperg and horror movie fan to this day so he'll buy, rent, or stream some movie and invite me to watch it with him. "Hey toilet! You remember the succubus in VHS, right? They made a movie out of it! Wanna watch?" We also live an hour away from a movie theater that screens old and cheesy movies. Last year we saw The Beyond on screen. That was cool.
But yeah, having one tape collecting dust in your basement is going to prove your taste in horror isn't so vanilla. Totally. As everyone else has said, Get Out and Hereditary are perfectly good movies. It's just that they're so conventional. It's like saying you like zombie movies but have only seen the Zack Snyder Dawn of the Dead remake. It's a decent remake, but why not go watch an actual Romero zombie flick? Or Shaun of the Dead for that matter? Similarly, The Serpent and the Rainbow isn't the best of Wes Craven's work. (It's better than My Soul to Take though, I'll give it that.)
