Sacrifice is a quirky and fun RTS/RPG hybrid.

Sacrifice was yet another game that people raved about while at the same time it didn't sell at all. I also think it was built on the same engine as Messiah except they fixed most of the broken and terrible shit. Messiah, that was a horrible and largely incomprehensible game but they had a novel idea used for the engine: dynamic tessellation of the models. They created high poly-count models that, in real-time, scaled down in complexity to match the systems abilities to transform/render them, hypothetically meaning that future computers would run a more detailed game. That was a horrible idea, as the load on the CPU/graphics card constantly changed from frame to frame and second to second so did the models and textures, making them morph, melt and jitter in a way that was more unsettling than the undulating flesh of everyone in Kingpin: Life of Crime. At least the textures on the models stayed the same in Kingpin.

(only image I could find with a wireframe of what is supposedly a base model)

The same character in game, you can see that on parts of the body the textures are more detailed but that changes constantly just like the model itself.

The main character, looks pretty decent for the time but look at his legs and how deformed they are.

Other times they look perfectly fine.

Messiah is terrible.

Army Men RTS

It's Command and Conquer but with an aesthetic of being toys waging battle in residential locations like a bathroom, a backyard or a basement. It also plays a lot simpler than most other RTS games so it is a lot easier to get into compared to Command and Conquer

but on-top of that it natively works in widescreen (shocked me) and I couldn't find any modern Windows hiccups. The only thing I disliked about it was it lacks a skirmish mode but there's actually a mod for the game that simply allows you to play the multiplayer with AI opponents without a human opponent being present. And fully incorporates it into the UI. Why this wasn't in the game at launch is puzzling since it's standard in the genre.

Pretty much every pre-Sarges War game in the Army Men series is a gem.

Messiah is terrible.

IIRC the powers in Messiah were pretty cool and unique for the time, but much like Crimson Skies it's pretty much impossible to get working on modern hardware.

I'm on my way to another game convention in South Carolina in a few weeks. Got lost of must gets, not limited to a Power Pad for the NES, a CIB Dragon Warrior 2 (making a goal to one day have all four CIB), and any big bite NES cart like Felix the Cat.

And when my season is over and when I have more time to work on it I'm gonna start my General Retro Game thread.

There are ardent purists out there who will think that anything past NES is not retro, but lets face facts the XBOX first gen is now officially 18 years old. So how long is long enough for something to be considered vintage or retro?
Besides I think if it's a good enough game people are willing to budge on their comfort levels. ;)

Retro vs. "vintage" is actually a good debate to have.

If I were to posit definitions, "retro" is anything 10+ years old.

What you could call the "golden age" of video games before everything was distilled into just a handful of genres and graphics were what mattered most.

I've been thinking the same thing about dividing it into "ages" because what 'feels' retro will always be guided by what some played as kids and because people were kids at different points in time... Just think about it, in a couple of months the Xbox 360 will be 14 years old. Some people that grew up with video games bought it at launch with money they earned from having a job, other people that grew up with video games got it as a Christmas present in 2005 when they were 12. They will both share the same feeling of what makes something retro (age) but what they consider retro will differ because of their age.

So while it pains me when someone says that a certain game is retro/vintage I know it's a matter of personal perception and it's not fair to try to change their mind. Unless it's about being overall nostalgic about the 2010's, that is NOT ok, that's like being nostalgic about the 90's DURING the 90's.

I only started playing Assassin's Creed yesterday. I've not got a new console yet, as I have so many back titles I got for my 360 because they were cheap.

PSX games I played as a teen are now considered vintage, so I agree it really comes down to a perception of what was the thing when you were young and playing the majority of your games.

@muh_moobs Thanks for the list!

As for computer games of the period that I'd recommend.

Sierra collection.

Kings Quest (My recommendations are 4 & 6 as the best of the series.)

Quest for Glory I - V (This is a gem of an adventure series is my personal favorite, with elements of humor and roleplaying character development built in, you actually port your character from each game. 4 is the stand out game of the series and the Sierra collection for that matter, (Jacob Rhys-Davies as narrator along is worth it) but all except for III, which had rushed development are comparatively solid and joys to play.)

Legends Series (Conquest of Camelot, Conquest of The Longbow.) Both solid entries, though separate stories, one is Arthur's quest for the Grail, the other is the legend of Robin Hood.

Leisure Suit Larry (3 & 5 are the personal best, play the modern remake of 1, it's great.)

Colonels Bequest & The Dagger Of Amon Ra (Really nice mystery games that stand out among the other sierra entries. CB was the first game I ever beat, so I'm a bit biased.)

Police Quest (The other 3 entries before swat are ok, but 2 was the best of the lot. Only worth playing if your interested in policing or like adventure games.)

Space Quest (Comedic series in line with Leisure Suit Larry, but without the sex. Lots of great humor. 4 & 5 are best.)

Gabriel Knight (Sins of the Father and Blood of the Sacred, Blood of the Damned are the best. The Beast Within had a fine plot line, but it was a interactive video adventure, and therefore doesn't sit well in the genre as the others. Bonus points for Tim Curry and Mark Hamill as part of the cast.)

Goldrush! (Guilty pleasure, it's a one off and it's a gem. You play a brother in the east who is contacted by his estranged brother in California. He's hit the motherlode, so you set off to find him, avoiding death, disease and disaster along the way.)

Gobliiins Series (If you like puzzle games, these are pretty fun and weird games by Sierra for the period.)

The Incredible Machine (Shooting Cats was never so much fun, seriously.)

LucasArts

Maniac Mansion & Day Of The Tentacle (First Scumm game ever produced. Day of the Tentacle is it's more updated and humorous sequel.)

Zak Mckraken and the Alien Mindbenders. (Great comedic game, where Lucasarts started to hit it's stride.)

The Monkey Island Series (1 & 2 are classics and great games, but they're all comparatively great and worth playing.)

The Tex Murphy Series

Will update when I have time

I'm still not entirely sure why, given the massive output of free fan content over the past 25 years, people buy single-player FPSes that aren't Doom 2. Whatever you're playing, you can get something as good or better that'll last you for thousands of hours of play time, all for less than ten bucks. Jesus Christ.

Ha I remember back in the day when Quake was considered to be the "Doom Slayer!" ah if they only knew.
Still testament to it's playability is the fact it's still popular.

Something jogged my memory.

Legend of The Red Dragon. This was a BBS Doors game from back in the day, and along with the Sierra titles is probably one of the first games I ever played. It's a simple text based adventure where you have to train and move up the levels in order to face and kill the Red Dragon and end up on a leader board. It was highly addictive for a text based game and a lot of fun.

Another text based adventure is the adaptation of James Clavell's Shogun. Very fun game even without prior knowledge of the source material. Absolutely merciless and will kill you fifty ways from Sunday but it's a lot of fun.

All that and no Luigi's mansion 1? Son I am disappoint.

I've been playing a lot of Ocarina of Time lately, so that. Needs a walkthrough for a lot of things, especially the Water Temple. I can appreciate how well it was designed, and it's basically a 3D Link to the Past anyway.

That game aged well even for a N64 game. The 3ds one is great too especially with the gyro aiming over the n64 joystick. I know people still prefer the N64 Majoras Mask but the 3ds one made more user friendly and some quality of life improvements especially with saving your game and skipping forward to a particular hour.

The 1E AD&D "Gold Box" series. Pseudo-3D (on a 2D grid, 1 box = 10 feet, supposedly), overland travel on maps, pseudo-isometric (grid again) combat. Very limited but fun. Combat-focused, limited role-playing opportunity (although one game tried the mechanic of characters falling in love. Among other things, if their lover was killed, they'd go into a rampage and be controlled by the AI, and they'd get depressed [minus to hit and save] if the party rejected their love.) Wild variation in art quality. A fairly faithful recreation of the AD&D rules, limited of course by the technology. Stories were of varying quality although mostly unmemorable and similar to one another. You could edit your character's ability scores to be all 18's (a feature designed for importing pen and paper characters.) Had obnoxious copy protection that involved physical objects (an "adventurer's journal" that included most of the game content. Would say "type word X on page Y" when booting up in addition to being more or less unplayable without, or at least much less enjoyable. Now available readily online. Many of them were fakes, like "I can't believe [NPC] turned out to be a traitor!" so you couldn't just read through. They also sold clue books with spoilers, walkthroughs, and detailed maps.) For their era (1988-1993) were class. Spawned a game-making program, Unlimited Adventures and an MMO, Neverwinter Nights. I don't know if it's just because it's nostalgic for me but I love these.

I know people still prefer the N64 Majoras Mask but the 3ds one made more user friendly and some quality of life improvements especially with saving your game and skipping forward to a particular hour.

That was one of the things that put me off playing Majora's Mask on the original system. I was only young, had borrowed it from a friend. (He had Ocarina, but all the save games were taken up by members of the family.) I don't own a 3ds so it's something I've never revisited.

I am currently going back through the golden age of CRPG's and enjoying the hell out of it. Icewind Dale, Baldurs Gate, Planescape, Arcana of steamworks and magick obscura, temple of elemental evil, Nox, Divine Divinity, Dark Sun, Neverwinter Nights, inquisitor, Fallout, Wasteland, and of course the gold box AD&D's like eye of the beholder and pool of radiance, as well as Daggerfall and Morrowind. I truely miss the days when buying a game bought 60+ hour playthroughs with thousands of hidden secrets and maximum replayability. If you pick up any one of these games you could literally play it every day for a month and still find something new the next day. Games today seldom have that, even the open world varity, which have a lot of small areas with a bunch of nothing between them. Meanwhile in Baldurs Gate for instance, thsoe areas of nothing between major towns often have interesting characters, easter eggs, and quests, nothing is wasted.
