The price of items is determined by the marketplace which is determined by the community. You buy/get dropped crates and then you spend money to buy keys and then you open the crates to get a random item (Weapons, Hats, Miscs, Taunts) which you can then put out into the marketplace at any price you want. Items have rarity tiers and unique effects on them that make them more rare because they have a smaller percent chance of dropping from an opened crate which means there's very few of them which means whoever opened a crate and got one can list it at any price they want which means that for the longest time some really nice looking hats were unobtainable by most people not willing to spend hundreds-thousands of dollars. You could buy the regular hat in the in-game store for a couple bucks but the FANCY ones were only obtainable through crates and the marketplace.

Basically it was to make them feel good and important and so they could show off their expensive backpacks filled with unusuals to the hatless peasants and also because it's gambling and it makes the whales feel good when they get a sparkly like in a gatcha or MMO.

The smart people who uncrate unusuals usually put them up for sale on the third party trading sites for real world currency back or they just wanted a specific one to make their army man pretty and don't partake unless another one comes out that they really like and they wait to see one go for cheap or smelt weapon drops into metal and save up.


It was a different time. A time you can even go back to if you have the Orange Box on Xbox.

Nice explanation, but I understood most of this already, this shit was why I said "I can kind of get the people that just want a funny hat desperately," I can understand to a extent the people that want certain hats or like to collect the hats, but they don't seem like the type to sperg on the hat market, because they want the hats. The people that I don't get are those who buy the hats to try and invest in them to make money, to me it seems silly to invest into fake hats, and even sillier to not accept the possibility that the market could completely crash, maybe my minds just not programmed to understand gambling, I don't know.

No one buys hats as an "in"- most people selling hats are cashing out to autists. Almost no one who directly buys hats is a trader.

In my opinion, though, an occasional TF2\CSGO market crash is always good.
There are some pretty serious assholes hidden in there. It's almost like wall street at times, but slightly more autistic (or not, I met some people from market, i don't really know who's more retarded).

TF2 allows you to dress up as a plane and whack people with a sign that has a pic of 9/11 on it. Overwatch bans you for spamming "toxic voice lines". Yeah I wonder which one is better.

Same. This is why I also will always love Valve even though they stopped making games just to rake in the Steam and VR bucks, because I can call people niggers and dress up the Demoman as a terrorist and not get banned or even reported.

Valve is lazy so going PC would kill them.

They'd have to redo the character models of their CS games due to the T models turning people into terrorists.

The most pessimistic and skilled people I've met mained medic. The second they allowed the crossbow in competitive TF2, all the free top division medic main girls dropped like flies. Suddenly they had to switch to a weapon, aim, and land shots to save teammates across the map.

The pessimistic people could do this, cus they played other classes. The girls couldn't. Girls are dogshit healsluts half the time.

I had a few friends who purchased flight tickets through trading hats up for weeks and eventually cashing out. It's crypto for teenagers.

I kind of expected them to reverse all the hats and not just lock them, else I would've at least bought a few green energy. Once more, I lose out on bugged TF2. Every hat drop spree I've never gotten a single one, and I instantly sold my Bill's hat and earbuds cus I figured "no way they'll become a currency".

Then again, team spirit max head is superior to unusuals and often more rare.

My friend is a really good Medic main and she'd agree with this but she also hates other Medic mains and gets mad at them all the time lol.
