Correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't it be very unusual for a lawyer who works for a firm to be hired as an individual and not through the firm? Unless it's a prior connection, personal acquaintance or something like that (but even then...)?

Not really. Sometimes the firm will have rainmaker partners who bring in cases with their names and then they get assigned to associates, but people bring in their own cases all the time. Most people want to hire a lawyer they already know if they can.
