I'm reading in the Weeb Wars thread that Netflix is going to redub the (massively overrated fite me irl) Evangelion series. Anyone know why? Is it some licensing thing, or do they think they can do a better job, or what?

I suspect that Netflix licensed the streaming rights from the Japanese rights holders and not Sentai, who I presume still own the rights to the old ADV Films dub track.

It could also be a technical thing where an English dub recorded for home video in the analogue era just doesn't sound as crisp on modern equipment as modern digital audio dubs.

I just finished the first episode of Magical Girl Spec-Ops Asuka. I see what the author is trying to do, but I'm afraid it's sabotaged by his assburgers or whatever form of crippling autism he suffers from. The one scene where the cute plushies returned Asuka's parents's body parts in a box like the KGB once did to some Hezbollah terrorist leader back in the 80s, was some dark comedy skit you'd see in Franken Fran (the fact that there is no anime adaptation of Franken Fran is a travesty against God, but that's another tale for another time).

The scenes taking place in the school were agonizingly boring I felt like turning into dust like Donovan at the end of The Last Crusade. The dialogue and especially Asuka's inner monologue is something you'd expect from a shitty fanfiction written by a 15 year old. The final scene though with Asuka fighting the terrorists was pretty dope though and I do dig the opening theme.

Just saw the new Fate/Stay Night movie with a friend, it was good!

I came across this degenerate shit in summary it's about a couple who don't particularly think their spouse cares about them and unbeknownst to either of them both are doing questionable shady shit. It's quite interesting although there is a lot of sex and violence you have been warned.

Household Affairs by Butcher Boy

i think i fapped to that like 6 years ago, is it still going somehow?!

I don't mind Animax dubs. It's like they're doing faux American accents but you can hear a hint of something else in Nagi's voice: sort of British, sort of Asian.

EDIT: Oh, the dub was done by Red Angel Media, which is in Hong Kong, not Singapore like I assumed before. I suppose that would explain the slightly British intonations in Nagi's dubbed voice.

I mean, it's pretty obviously bad. You get a lot of edgy torture porn scenes in every episode and little substance. Sort of like Made in the Abyss minus all the great world building. I don't think it's so bad that it's unwatchable and I sort of like the concept of the series (Magical Girls defeat big bad army and immediately start becoming terrorists and abusing their powers).

I decided to marathon through Magical Girl Sped-Ops Asuka to see if it gets better or how bad it'll get, since I have nothing better to do while recuperating. I'm currently at episode 7.

The one mini arc where Nozomi, one of Asuka's friends, gets kidnapped and tortured was pretty intense, but man did they fuck up the ending. At the end of the day Nozomi was saved and her physical wounds were healed, however she did suffer some serious mental trauma. Just looking at magical girls and scissors is enough to make hear freak out and pass out from a catatonic shock. I was pretty hyped to see how Nozomi is going to deal with her trauma and how she'll try to find her way back into a normal functional life and how her friends and loved ones are going to help her. The nurse girl however using her magic to erase Nozomi's traumatic memories and reset her as if Nozomi's psyche is a Windows OS with a restore point, was a narrative approach I found to be most unorthodox for a show that wants to have PTSD as one of its themes.

That one mascot character is irritating as fuck. The "Magical Girl Trivia" is the author openly capitulating and admitting his complete and utter incompetence by not understanding 'show, don't tell'. "Whenever Asuka uses this attack, she spends all her magic". It was a cute running gag in Terraformars and Killing Bites where you'd learn some trivia about animals, but here the only trivia you learn is that the author would be better off doing H-Doujinshis. If I have to hear "Here's some Magical Girl Trivia" in a squaky voice one more time, I swear to God I'm going to strangle and eat someone's pet!

And fuck me does the dub suck out loud! It's late 90s/early 2000s era levels of bad.

What bothers me is that it could have been legitimately good. The author should have made this about a PTSD ridden magical girl who just snaps, says "fuck it!" and goes postal.

Remember when Cencoroll had a sequel announcement that then went silent for years?

Sequel's happening for reals.

There's a bit in the anime adaption of Space Brothers that always bugged me.

An astronaut's gone to the moon. His father's established as distant and uncommunicative. He never even goes as far to say something along the lines of being proud that his son's an astronaut. One night, his father's with the rest of the family, eating "Moon Viewing Udon" while looking at the moon, which seems to be a thing. Suddenly, he clears his throat and recites a haiku about eating moon-viewing udon while his son is on the moon.

I thought it was one of the most moving moments in the story. The anime plays it for laughs. I really wonder if the author meant it to be a joke.

Is anyone else reading Beastars here? I know it looks like your typical furfaggotry, but it's actually pretty good!

Netflix is producing a new dub for Evangelion in other languages too. This will be the third time the series gets dubbed in Latin America, for example.
Could be rights issues(The fact they are redubbing it in many languages may be a Gainax thing, since they no longer own Eva,but may still own the old dubs.Or maybe the local distributors from many countries may own those dubs and they didn't reach a deal),or now that Anno has fully control,he wants those new dubs to be done the way he wants to and supervise them himself,or could be they want to have a dub done with higher quality equipment like you said(in Japan, the sound was remastered to the point that some sound effects and music placements were changed.)
