I dunno "when," but Funimation actually tried to bring T4S in at some point, and Toei told them under absolutely no circumstances are they to work with T4S. Toei doesn't appreciate the parody, and has been dogging T4S for years.

There's video of Schemmel talking about this (mostly out of his ass). They seem to have a gun pointed at their head on this matter.

The reason for it is completely Autistic and has to do with the company not understanding how fair use law works. Every time TFS has had their show disappear for a bit, it's been Toei behind it. Every time. And each time, it's for the same reason: Toei claiming the clips violate copyright, which they don't, which, paired with TFS having a big footprint, is why it gets overturned each time within days.

The thing is: Toei isn't unique here.

Many of the Japanese companies behind these animation studios are fucking insane with how they view things like Youtube. It's not even Anime-exclusive. It's like all these companies are stuck in the days before Nintendo lost Nintendo vs Blockbuster and they view fan content and tribute videos as sales not made. It's especially idiotic with certain shows (and their OSTs; fucking try uploading songs or simply have a video with a song from Soul Taker, Kantai Collection, or like 200 other shows and watch how fast your video gets hit with a block for all regions, copyright claim, or DMCA takedown notice). Other companies are smarter about this shit (the guys behind Gundam for instance host ALL their content on Youtube eventually), but a lot of the old guard either haven't gotten the menu or don't care.

Didn't Konami have this view for years until they realized Yu-Gi-Oh Abridged was the sole cause behind sales increasing and stopped DMCA'ing LittleKuriboh's channel? And perhaps that is why a movie was eventually made?

slightly off topic but doesn't shoen jump own that or is it a joint thing between konami and them. thought konami only made the yugi-oh video games

Konami also print the card game, at least they did last time I checked. I haven't played Yu-Gi-Oh in in over 15 years and when I did it was still in the hands of upper deck.

Konami would have nothing to do with YGOA getting taken down. The anime would have to be taken down by Studio Gallop or TV Tokyo who own the rights to the anime. Konami is a consultant and a producer/advertiser for the anime as they provide many card ideas and merch but they don't own the anime. I'd also doubt that some parody series was helping boost card sales or video game sales which is what Konami profits off of the Yugioh brand. But I welcome any evidence contrary to that.

Shonen Jump is just where the Yugioh manga was published. The publisher of that magazine, Shueisha, along with Kazuki Takahashi who is the manga artist, are the owners of the original license.

Abridged series in particular are in a weird grey area at the moment. While it is a parody, it's made up of mostly of footage that they don't own. In Japan, rights holders turn a blind eye to things like fan published manga (doujinshi) but that's due to having low print runs that don't exactly turn a profit and are seen as a scene that cultivates potential future talent. It's also all original work, aside from characters, not reworked footage or manga panels. Not super familiar with copyright law in Japan so I don't know how much they're legally required to protect it. Even parodies have landed actual anime like Osomatsu-san in hot water over rights issues.

I've also seen many people online saying x abridged series is a replacement for watching x anime so if with a gun held to my head I could see kinda how anime companies see a potential loss. Not to mention, Abridged series like DBZA have cultivated profit for its creators through merch sales which are definitely infringing on something. I'm sure Toei could also that TFS wouldn't have as big a following if they were doing purely original work instead of leeching of Dragon Ball.

Ultimately, until any of these content creators try their luck in court I don't see that there will be definitive answers as to whether abridged series are infringing on rights or actively taking away profit any time soon. I think the former might be true but the latter is much harder pill to swallow. If I were any of the people making them I would try to stay on rights holders good graces as much as possible cause it's quite apparent they hold most of the cards on the matter.

And as far as these Abridged people taking over, I would prefer just sticking to subs.

I went to check out reddit to see if they were talking about the controversy (HA)

Looks like it's pretty much a soft ban on talk after the initial announcement. If you only read reddit, Vic disappeared never to be heard of again.
Hrm. I'm part of that sub and commented about Vic getting a very strong litigating firm on board and (at the time) the GoFundMe was at $85k+. Then it got shut down. The official ruling over there was only "official news" from official news sites (e.g. ANN, if that is mindblowing enough) and not videos from random youtubers.

Might DM one of the mods and see if I can get the new info ($100k achieved, Todd Haberkorn on the tag team, "papers have been filed", etc). Probably won't allow it, but I'll at least have tried.

Believe it or not, Crunchyroll's dub didn't censor anything from the first episode.
