Zoe got the power she has in the video game industry/press due to a couple of factors:
1. Fucked all the right people
2. Is female and spouts all of the right political jargon
3. And this is the most important, but ties into the previous two: the gaming press decided, unilaterally because of reasons one and two, to make her the "new face of indie video games". A LOT of capital was invested by a lot of powerful people to try and make Zoe a figure of influence and power within gaming. It's why the gaming press and it's ilk were so willing to die protecting her during Gamergate, in that Zoe was a pet project for the gaming press as far as taking a nobody camwhore and turning her into the poster girl for the indie gaming industry. They made Zoe and were dead set on stopping anything or anyone who might tear down their creation (though Zoe fucking her benefactors probably helped, in terms of Zoe using sex to more permanently bind her benefactors into sacrificing themselves for her once it became apparent to EVERYONE that Zoe was pure evil and not worth burning everything done in order to protect).
I think the explanation for her staying power in terms of games journalism is a lot simpler, but also a lot weirder.
So I think anyone with a functioning brain and internet connection could see that Zoe is trash, she isn't a games designer or producer, and if she is it's mid-level office tier work, when relied upon to actually great a genuine product she hasn't got a great track record.
So initially she was using her puss to influence positive press for her Indy game, and this was probably done when she still had the intention of being a game developer, or was at least looking to build up enough positive credit with depression quest to get herself a nice little position at a big studio, her blue check mark, and a regular salary.
The issue was is that this all happened during gamer gate, and she became the focus of attention because she was the one that captured the public perception. Look at it this way, if it had been anyone else from Quinn caught shagging journalist for favorable press then they would have ended up being the main victim of gamer gate.
The main difference is, is that despite the negative reactions from gamers, all of a sudden you had a lot of press come to her aid, partly because of the sympathy, white knighting and virtue signalling that millenials are so apt to claim, but as well as that it became it's own weird self sustaining movement, GG and the SJW's that fought them was news, and I'm willing to be that if you could have seem their metrics during that time, the clickbait titles were probably making them a killing in terms of click through. We already know that the journalist have no ethics, especially game journos, so the capacity for click through on articles does become a factor, monetarily and also because of future potential for a salaried position at one of these large clickbait mills. No different from any hacks.
For Zoe's part the attention, the sympathy, the power and the money it brought, especially the money and the power would be a really fantastic reason to push the GG and SJW stuff to the max, as long as she has stayed in the public perception, and was drawing money from the various sympathetic organisations and paypigs who were willing to throw her shekels, she remains somewhat relevant and the gravy train continued. Hence the reason that despite protesting the opposite, Zoe has always been trying to get herself at the center of attention, whether that was sabotaging contests or starting feuds with people on twitter.
For their part the games press prop her up at this point because they had spent so much time in the beginning trying to paint her as the martyr. Rather than admit they were wrong, and I'm sure some actually do believe she is honest and a real game developer, the majority of game journos won't admit the narrative now because it will mean that the original reason for GG and those "Toxic Fans" were actually right, and the media was wrong, and they simply can't do that.
Or at least that's my impressions, I'm not super well versed on all the details.
