'Empire' star Jussie Smollett attacked in possible hate crime

“Empire" actor Jussie Smollett was attacked in the early morning hours on Tuesday in what Chicago police are calling a possible hate crime.

Smollett was attacked by two people "yelling out racial and homophobic slurs" and "poured an unknown chemical substance on the victim," police said.

According to police, one of Smollett's alleged attackers also put a rope around his neck. Both fled the scene.

Smollett took himself to Northwestern Hospital and "is in good condition," police told CNN.

Later Tuesday, CNN's Don Lemon spoke to Smollett and a mutual friend who was at the hospital with the actor. Smollett confirmed the incident took place.

He was shaken and angry that an attack like this could happen. Smollett told CNN he fought back at the attackers.

"Given the severity of the allegations, we are taking this investigation very seriously and treating it as a possible hate crime," the police statement said.

Smollett has starred on Fox's "Empire" since 2015. He plays Jamal, a successful singer in the musical Lyon family. Like his character, Smollett identifies as gay.

"We are deeply saddened and outraged to learn that a member of our 'Empire' family, Jussie Smollett, was viciously attacked last night," a representative of 20th Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment said in a statement to CNN. "We send our love to Jussie, who is resilient and strong, and we will work with law enforcement to bring these perpetrators to justice. The entire studio, network and production stands united in the face of any despicable act of violence and hate -- and especially against one of our own."

A representative for GLAAD told CNN the organization has reached out Smollett to offer assistance and support.

"Jussie is a true champion for LGBTQ people and is beloved by the community and allies around the world," a GLAAD spokesperson said in a statement.

The cops have released all the basic facts of the investigation so no more juicy leaks and headlines from that side anymore. So Helping Hand (an anti-sjw youtuber that for once, I actually kind of like) gave his two cents on the matter.
He also briefly describes a history of hate crimes faked by people of color in the US which I did find interesting.

It's very strange that he didn't seem to think that victims of a violent crime driven by disgust or hatred are incapable of much of anything afterward, never mind getting away with the light injuries he had. Maybe he really is just that coddled or something, but it strikes me as something more than just being an idiot or a pussy.

When I heard the noose was just cheap ass clothesline it just made what I already knew was bunk to be even more hilarious and sad. How hard is it to get an actual rope?

Human bodies are fragile. He's an actor and a faggot, and he did this for money and attention. Getting his face rearranged means a permanent salary hit and possibly never getting laid for free (faggots are vain and superstitious), and he can't give paid exclusive interviews if he's in a coma. Also, even Omelette isn't exceptional enough to think the industry would care if he got beat up - they'd use it for self-promotion and promptly forget about him. Real violence is not glamorous and it doesn't make for a good story, especially if the perps aren't caught. There'd be a charity fund to pay for surgery, tax-free and therefore hard to steal from, and a Very Special episode of Empire.

It feels like pointless sophistry to defend one point of a massively exceptional plan, but no, the decision to not get brutalized wasn't by itself bad. The news is full of stories where a regular mugging turns into a triple murder and a citywide police chase, but it's also full of stories where the perp surrenders or flees upon meeting minimal resistance, like 1: pulls out gun "Gimme your phone and wallet!" 2: "No." 1: drops gun, runs away. If he had reliable co-conspirators with a pre-existing comm channel (e.g. his drug dealers in his hometown - Santa Rosa, pop 175k) and hadn't sent the letter, he might have succeeded.

Even more pathetic is that they couldn't even figure out how to tie a simple noose. If that were actual rednecks they'd know how or figure out how to tie a noose. It dead simple.

His brother is just as stupid as he is.
So sending a fake letter has been “debunked” by the reputable sites popculture, (which is so generic I can’t find it) and NewsOne, which describes its self as “latest news from a black perspective with stories and opinions you won’t read anywhere else (but should)”.
I guess he’s totally innocent and the CPD will be dropping all charges at anytime.
