'Empire' star Jussie Smollett attacked in possible hate crime

“Empire" actor Jussie Smollett was attacked in the early morning hours on Tuesday in what Chicago police are calling a possible hate crime.

Smollett was attacked by two people "yelling out racial and homophobic slurs" and "poured an unknown chemical substance on the victim," police said.

According to police, one of Smollett's alleged attackers also put a rope around his neck. Both fled the scene.

Smollett took himself to Northwestern Hospital and "is in good condition," police told CNN.

Later Tuesday, CNN's Don Lemon spoke to Smollett and a mutual friend who was at the hospital with the actor. Smollett confirmed the incident took place.

He was shaken and angry that an attack like this could happen. Smollett told CNN he fought back at the attackers.

"Given the severity of the allegations, we are taking this investigation very seriously and treating it as a possible hate crime," the police statement said.

Smollett has starred on Fox's "Empire" since 2015. He plays Jamal, a successful singer in the musical Lyon family. Like his character, Smollett identifies as gay.

"We are deeply saddened and outraged to learn that a member of our 'Empire' family, Jussie Smollett, was viciously attacked last night," a representative of 20th Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment said in a statement to CNN. "We send our love to Jussie, who is resilient and strong, and we will work with law enforcement to bring these perpetrators to justice. The entire studio, network and production stands united in the face of any despicable act of violence and hate -- and especially against one of our own."

A representative for GLAAD told CNN the organization has reached out Smollett to offer assistance and support.

"Jussie is a true champion for LGBTQ people and is beloved by the community and allies around the world," a GLAAD spokesperson said in a statement.

It's a pan-agrarian-shithole kind of thing. Concentrated acid and your buddy's moped are the easiest things at hand when you're a dirt farmer and Stacy goes for her cousin Chad instead of you, merely because he's ten times richer and didn't look like he got hit by a thresher. But the idea that Jussie would been stupid enough to have kept the jug of bleach he used in the planted hot sauce, with the amount of investigative forces on him, is just too much stupidity to fathom.

You don't often run across one person of such skill and competence, much less two brothers.

Much more likely he had his nigerian fuckbuddies perpetrate this false incident and the fact that it happened out of surveillance camera framing is merely an accident.

Unless this is some bizarrely elaborate setup the only way this happens is if the police believe they weren't actually involved in the "attack" in any way. No way people that just came back from a trip to Nigeria walk free if there's any possibility of them being involved.

My guess is that Jussie never cut them in on the plan. He had to have called them out to the scene in order to get them on camera as "attackers" maybe had them put a clothesline in an alley he could retrieve, then pointed them out as the MAGA fiends. Worst case scenario for Jussie, "whoops I guess these guys I knew had a grudge."

At the same time, I can't imagine the police believing these two unless they had some kind of hard evidence.

More likely the Police can’t charge them with assault, when they are convinced no actual assault happened. They can’t charge them with the fraud and filing a police report as they aren’t the ones that reported or claimed anything. They may be part of a conspiracy to commit fraud, but more work is needed.

What amazes me is that he thought it best to involve others in this stupid scheme at all and tried to create evidence. If he has just taken a walk, gone down a dark alley and waited for 3 minutes, then ran home he could have just told the same lies. (Leave out the fake physical evidence too) it would have been much harder to prove a total fabrication than a fraud he elisted the help of two shady Nigerians to help enact with fake evidence.

Even had the cops not managed to track down the Nigerians I bet they would have realized they could get a bigger pay day by selling the story of Jussies hoax to the tabloids and done so.

This seems the most likely scenario. Police have been offering deals to footpads and middlemen to get leverage on the capos since cops existed. Who cares about arresting some nobody Nigerians? Smollett, pathetic as he is, counts as the big fish in this case, and bringing him down is the priority.

That and CPD could only hold them for 48 hours without charges. Whether they're innocent, they flipped on Jussie, or investigators need more time to get them on conspiracy, they had to be let go.

But, if you do so with the intent to use it to add verisimilitude to a fake hate crime that you filed a false police report over, well that sounds like making the US mail part of your conspiracy to commit a crime... and Uncle Sam HATES when you use his stuff to break the law.......
