'Empire' star Jussie Smollett attacked in possible hate crime

“Empire" actor Jussie Smollett was attacked in the early morning hours on Tuesday in what Chicago police are calling a possible hate crime.

Smollett was attacked by two people "yelling out racial and homophobic slurs" and "poured an unknown chemical substance on the victim," police said.

According to police, one of Smollett's alleged attackers also put a rope around his neck. Both fled the scene.

Smollett took himself to Northwestern Hospital and "is in good condition," police told CNN.

Later Tuesday, CNN's Don Lemon spoke to Smollett and a mutual friend who was at the hospital with the actor. Smollett confirmed the incident took place.

He was shaken and angry that an attack like this could happen. Smollett told CNN he fought back at the attackers.

"Given the severity of the allegations, we are taking this investigation very seriously and treating it as a possible hate crime," the police statement said.

Smollett has starred on Fox's "Empire" since 2015. He plays Jamal, a successful singer in the musical Lyon family. Like his character, Smollett identifies as gay.

"We are deeply saddened and outraged to learn that a member of our 'Empire' family, Jussie Smollett, was viciously attacked last night," a representative of 20th Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment said in a statement to CNN. "We send our love to Jussie, who is resilient and strong, and we will work with law enforcement to bring these perpetrators to justice. The entire studio, network and production stands united in the face of any despicable act of violence and hate -- and especially against one of our own."

A representative for GLAAD told CNN the organization has reached out Smollett to offer assistance and support.

"Jussie is a true champion for LGBTQ people and is beloved by the community and allies around the world," a GLAAD spokesperson said in a statement.

I wonder if that PR company Smollett ran to has dropped him yet.

If not it's going to be so entertaining to watch them twist themselves into knots trying to spin all this.

What I love about the "attackers" being Nigerian is that I figured, if an attack happened at all, the attackers were black. Smollett saying he couldn't tell the attackers' race was a tell. Even going by voice, I can usually guess someone's race with decent accuracy. I've met a few black guys who sounded whiter than I do, but they're outliers. And something about his description about what they said to him either sounded like something homophobic black dudes would say (not including the "MAGA country" crap) or it sounded like something a gay black dude thinks white homophobic racists would say. Either way, his story wasn't adding up.

Last week, police discovered a Chilli Habanero hot sauce bottle which seemed to contain bleach (above). It was found near where Smollett says he was attacked and had bleach poured on him . It was found 10 days after the attack.

Funny that one of the five facts you need to know isn't that Smollett swore these two were responsible when he thought police didn't know who they were. Or that police found two guns in their house. What a pathetic attempt to spin this is.
 
Wait, do we have a firm yes or no on whether or not they're citizens? They're being called Nigerians, call themselves Nigerians, fly to Nigeria to flash cash, but went to high school and college in the US. Has anyone seen reference to their citizenship/visa status? They've been living, going to school, and working for quite a few years in the US at this point as part of the system.

The brother who appeared on Empire has no adult arrests in Chicago since 2014, but the Chicago Tribune reports that he was charged with attempted murder in Cook County in 2011 but later pleaded guilty to aggravated battery.

The national news mentioned that two people were arrested in connection with this.
The anchor went into details about the homophobic and racists slurs, as well as how "maga country" would tie the attack to Trump. He very briefly mentioned that the two men were black (didn't mention anything about them being Nigerian, nor that they have supposed connections with Jussie) and dismissively brought up the allegations that this was a hoax.
I think the media is going to string this along for as long as they can and ignore/deny any information that would ruin their narrative. So, you know, just do what they normally do

Fuck it, they might as well just gamergate it. Just repeat the fake story over and over and over and over until everyone knows those two maga lynchers did this to a poor upstanding poc of color. The truth is boring and can't stick to the fucking narrative anyway.
 
To a lot of people, it isn't going to matter what's true. Folks I know are still insisting it's real and that it was white Trump supporters and that anything to the contrary is fake and trotted out by muh Russia.

Their catchcry will be a smug "It's not a hoax, he was attacked", because technically he was "attacked". It just so happened that his attackers and he colluded to orchestrate the "attack". They COULD have yelled MAGA, they could have called him an empire nigga faggot and they could also be long lost princes from Nigeria. To the wokest, it matters not. They'll take the word "Hoax" literally on purpose to ackshually the shit out of this story, facts be damned.

Even if you hold down every liberal and record their screams and force them to admit that it was a hoax, they'll just go to the old fallback of "but this actually does happen every day and I'm glad he started a dialogue." Others have already pointed this out and it's 100% what they'll do because it's what they always do when someone actually decides to cover the 3 week follow up to a hate crime where it was all a hoax.
