Honest question for the furfags; how would you feel if your fetish lifestyle choice were pushed into the mainstream for consumption by normies as Vice et al. seem to be pushing for? Would you want normalfags showing up en masse in fursuits to your orgies conventions?

it will, inevitably, get pushed further and further into the mainstream but i think it will really struggle because it is a fetish and because a lot of it is gay and most people are straight without this weird fetish.

It will go where it goes and im not worried. Normies may be a breath of fresh air in many ways. There are already many normies among furries, but more normies would be kind of nice. Normies tend to push the awkward people and the assholes to the sidelines.

Best of all, normies invading their hobbies absolutely and profoundly enrages lolcows of all types. if normies speed up how they are pouring into furry spaces, we will see an explosion of lolcow tears from every side. there will probably be dumb things that lolcows will whine about that none of us can even begin to imagine. there will be so much drama about gatekeeping. there will be drama about the products that people are buying and other things. it's gonna be great.

That's always the furry fandom. They'll complain about not being treated seriously and respectfully by normal people, only to go on complaining about how the normies look down upon their more deviant behavior once they decided to embrace the fandom just a bit. Which probably explains why 2 was only not invited to give his performance at Anthrocon while not being banned. Because "how dare you ask me to behave like an adult and not a pervert in public REEEEEEEE!!!"

oh absolutely. but wait until the normies are the norm in the furry fandom. wait until some major companies start producing stuff that undercuts furry businesses. wait until someone tries to make a made for tv movie about two furries falling in love, but no one writing the movie actually knows anything about furries. wait for more news stories about christian moms being horrified that their kids are turning into furries.

regardless of how I feel about these things personally, they can and will enrage furries and that is a win for people like me who love to watch stupid drama.

I want to see the zoos, pedos, and rapists drawn and quartered. Or at least permanently removed from the community.

I want to see the remaining furries learn to get their fucking lives together while still keeping their weird hobby/fetish (it actually is different things to different people; to me, it's both).

Only when those two are done, can we even entertain the notion of mainstream acceptance.

That's been happening for years, my dude.

A good chunk of the fandom are actually accomplished industry professionals. They just have a tendency to be less... lolcow material.

1973's Robin Hood and umpteen not-even-made-for-TV-films following it with anthropomorphized characters. All you need to do is look at the fave movie list of furfags and you'll find dozens. This has been ingrained into the culture of a lot of 20- to 30-somethings from seemingly innocuous movies and characters.

DHGate steals the designs of popular suits and remakes them with shitty quality. I don't know if it's been linked here yet, but Violent J (from Insane Clown Posse) called them out on it and then took his daughter to a furry convention last year, both with their own custom-made suits.

I don't have any sauce links on the last piece, with actual news stories of parents complaining about their kids becoming furries, but people are already asking this question seriously (literally 30 seconds of Google effort).

EDIT: Yup, the Violent J stuff has been posted here a few times in the last year.

I know, I know it's already happening, but it's not happening on the scale that I want to see

The furry movies like Robin Hood, Balto, and Lion King are movies that the furries like though, movies made for both normies and furries. I'm talking about making movies about furries for normies to enjoy that furries will hate. A furry movie to really fucking piss furries off. The normie-furry equivalent of a straight man writing and directing lesbian porn when he he doesn't know where the clitoris is. It's bound to happen if furry becomes more mainstream.

Business stuff like making shitty knock off fursuits is niche and relatively rare. It's just enough to be a problem, not big enough to totally disrupt business among furries. I'm imagining something of a much much much larger scale.

Same with complaining parents. What's happening right now is not enough to be entertaining on the level I am hoping for. The parent stuff now is just not enough. I probably won't be satisfied until there are normies outside of furry conventions protesting something or other. Imagine Westboro Baptist Church types protesting furcons.

On one hand, it's already happened. Anthropomorphic animal movies have existed for a while and even movies featuring anthropomorphic inanimate objects (specifically vehicles) have fueled niche portions of the fandom. Many of them, from Robin Hood to Lion King to Zootopia have been hits among both furries and kids while even the ones that only kids care about get noticed when the kids who enjoyed them become adults. There are also numerous furries who go out of their way to watch kids films simply because they feature anthropomorphic animals and I've seen an overlap between cartoon autists and furries.

But if we're looking at the fandom itself here, there are plenty of outsiders already in it. While there are already some niche subcultures in the furry fandom simply because they're too small to sustain their own community, they have the same idea as furry but applied to other things such as vehicles or machines. Some online artists will also stick around the fandom online despite not being furries because they know they'll get steady commissions or Patreon dollars.

Then there are people like the pup gear fetishists who look like they got lost on the way to the BDSM/leather convention. There are the "ravers" who seem to go to cons more for the party experiences and with #AdventureCru, Lapfoxes set at Anthrocon 2012, and FWA announcing they will be featuring Mystery Skulls in 2019 (some indie musician with a wiki page and blue tick on Twitter but they don't seem like furries to me), they've made their presence unavoidable in the modern fandom. Media coverage has shifted from laughing at the furry fandom to trying to normalize it as a "safe space for queer/LGBTBBQ+= youth" while overlapping it with fetish cultures they try to normalize as well. A lot of newer furries from places like Tumblr tended to enjoy the lifestyler aspect of the fandom along with the "anyone is welcome valid here" mindset.

I think the main thing that's kept normies out of the fandom though is the lack of focus furry cons seem to have. At least with anime conventions people tend to overlook whatever wild drama happens there because normies dilute it, and that's because there's a common interest nerd cons seem to have. Anime cons tend to be focused on anime or geek culture at large, gaming conventions tend to have huge gaming rooms with attendees bringing rare games and consoles, and a lot of more niche conventions tend to focus on smaller "creative" subcultures (though the internet is increasingly changing that market).

Furry cons on the other hand, well what is there to focus on? Furry cons tend to come off more like big online meetups at best and fetish cons at worst. Most people going to cons tend to go there to party, to meet online friends, or to gain clout. While some dealer rooms might have sellers reminiscent of Comiket or smaller niche cons selling art and comics, it seems like a lot now are catering to lifestylers (tails, ears, collars, etc.) and I hear drama all the time about some dealer room seller peddling sexuality flag pins next to "punch a nazi" pins.

It's why it'll be so funny when something finally happens and furries notice that there are outsiders in their fandom. Some will screech, some will double down on their degeneracy to own the normies, some will threaten to leave the fandom after another round of drama, and some simply won't give a shit.

You get the full blown weeaboos who think that by making the pilgrimage (yes they call it pilgrimage themselves) to the holy land of nippon they will be accepted into their society and live out their lifelong dreams. But then you add -furries- into the mix, and a weeaboo furry will cream themselves over any kemono artist who comes their way and instantly try to befriend them in the hopes of having a bragging right of "i have a Japanese artist friend!" The furries seem to think having a kemono fursuit suddenly makes you Japanese and your basic hiragana you keep getting wrong is equivalent to an N2. Even despite the fact the vast majority of these suits are western made because the other popular makers only care about their social circle. As an added joke, a lot of kemono artists on social media will outright block foreigners who start tweeting at them because you're all filthy gaijin thieves who are going to trace their vaporeon chibi/huge breasted dragon/hyper muscle tiger getting fucked by a giant cock. Most of them don't want any involvement nor do they care about the western fandom, they have a very low opinion of it and think that western cons are just huge orgies and drug dens, which isn't wrong to be fair. They just want to keep to themselves and their friends and hide their shame because it doesn't conform to the standards society expects of them and they know they're a disgrace, but they gotta keep that salaryman job to buy that next $6000 k-line suit that they can't even wear because it'll fall apart.

SoFurry was originally a website called YiffStar that had a userbase for a while along with an ED page. YiffStar had a focus on furry fapfics instead of art but in 2009 the site rebranded into a more generic FurAffinity style website. It was around before FurAffinity was founded, but due to several events such as the rebrand it's trailed FurAffinity and Inkbunny in traffic on Alexa while beating out trendy but dead sites Weasyl and Furry Network.
