I've only come across GameDude.

''Lousy reviewing'' could be best summarised in any one of GameDude's ''reviews''.
* Nit-picking any negatives
* Exaggeration
* Intentionally (and obviously) trying to make a game look bad.
* Vagueness. While too much elaboration can be monotonous it helps to get more than one sentence out regarding an aspect of the game you're discussing.

''Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery'', but that flattery doesn't necessarily warrant a good imitation. I don't watch AVGN, but I watch the Nostalgia Critic from time to time, and much of the time his reviews are good and rational all while conforming to his character.
Well, the AVGN has been playing games his whole life, and it's pretty clear when a game's play control/hit detection sucks. But if you're trying to make a game look worse than it is, then you're a lousy reviewer. Or you just suck at video games.

Plus, the AVGN had made a lot of amateur movies already before even starting the whole AVGN persona. So he knew how to handle lighting, camerawork, timing, etc. Most "critics" couldn't get even one of those straight.

Sadly this is a lot of reviewers. One of the reasons I love ContinueShow so much is that they just do straight playthroughs, no exaggeration or anything like that. Reviewers like JonTron, Caddicarus, etc start to get really sucky when they take a mediocre game from the 80s or 90s and spend like 4 minutes pointing out that 8x8 sprites don't quite look like what they're meant to be, and that the platforming in some budget kids' NES cart isn't as good as in Super Mario Bros 3.

AVGN himself has jumped the shark, the whale and just about everything else in the sea. James and Mike Mondays are just them attempting to do Game Grumps, his movie sucked, and the newest episode is boring and rehashes old jokes.

AVGN isn't that good--the whole gimmick was already dry within a few episodes, some of the research and fact checking was poor, and so on.

However, he's still miles ahead of much of his competition, as much as it pains me to say it.

I'm just going to leave this here..... I'm losing so much respect for this guy, semi - positive views on Christmas aside (Just because we're approaching that time...).

Watch it all the way to the end to see what I'm hopefully getting at...

And I thought his "Monster Squad" Review was rage inducing shit... Might as well leave it here, too.

I seriously can't believe I used to think the Nostalgia Critic was funny. Either he's gone downhill hard, or I've just grown up.

Oy vey. He's not even trying anymore.

Personally, I now prefer the videos where Doug talks about movies as just himself instead of his NC character (i.e. Top 11 Movies I Like, But Everyone Else Seems to Hate)

Honestly, I say both. After discovering other things, he really doesn't appeal to me anymore. That review confirms it, it doesn't even seems that he tries anymore. His ego got the best of him. A shame since the guy made me watch more movies when I discovered him.

Yeah, NC disgusts me too.

One of the the things about AVGN that should have happened is to be more game reviews and less vulgarities. I remember when watching a review that I had to hit the mute button about how the game is [insert something vulgar here involving fecal matter and/or sexual acts]. But NC annoyed me, partially because the videos were boring (just sitting in front of a webcam), the whole TGWTG entourage (collection of douchebags/assholes, insane fans, lots of ads), he was running out of movies to review, but what finally broke it was when Doug's political views started to become increasingly overt. That or the crotch shots when he was dressed up as Link for one of their "movies".

Personally, I think he started slipping after the Digimon review. That video in itself was good, don't get me wrong, but you could tell he had ran out of anything really dated and cringeworthy to talk about. His absolute low point was after his comeback, and I think he's pretty much been at that same level since (although I did like some of the Nicholas Cage Month vids).

He has gone downhill pretty hard. I mean, I wouldn't say he was ever amazing but before his Comeback his reviews were at least still regulary entertaining. Of course Redlettermedia had beat him at his own game both in terms of humor and insight into their material but at his best he offered a humourous review on old movies you might remeber from your childhood from the somewhat exaggerated perspective of the average nerd.

I think he dropped the ball somewhere around his review of The Room and just went downhill from there. That's when his focus on actual review declined and long, drawn out, failed attempts at sketch comedy took its place. It was still bearable up to his hiatus and eventual comeback. As soon as he brought Token Black Guy and the Not-stalgia Chick into his videos and they started to be 30 minutes on average with 10 minutes of them being (usually misguided) comedy segments with little relation to the material being reviewed his videos sucked really, really badly.

When I saw the Timothy Green review, I figured he was going to get back on track. Sadly, it just didn't happen. With all this talk about "angry" critics, I couldn't help thinking of one of the first, The Filthy Critic. His character is messed-up white trash with a filthy mouth who does written reviews of movies (since the late 1990s). He even had pretend characters like Jimmy Critic (his nerdy nephew). You could pretty much say he's a precursor (though unlike a lot of these guys he doesn't like the geek culture).

Personally, I think CinemaSins is probably one of the better ones--while they have some questionable videos (partnering with Cracked on a few--that was execrable) they don't whore out their ego, they don't torment you with ads, and they can be entertaining without falling back on vulgarity.
