I worry the CCP will invade Taiwan in order to distract people's attention from the tanking economy, and in doing so they'll cause WWIII because the US and its Asian allies will intervene to stop them.

Don't forget that the US sold them F-14s and AIM-54s (both of which were relatively cutting edge at the time of their sale), along with modernizing their Navy and Army. Not sure where you're getting the implication that Iran doesn't have or produce oil now since it makes up a large chunk of their exports. (I could just be misunderstanding your intended meaning there.) The only reason, well aside from the geopolitical ones, that the US doesn't buy Iranian oil is because of sanctions put in place after The Revolution.

I'd say the categorization of him as being akin to modern SJWs is not an accurate one. While he was certainly liberal by Iranian standards, likening him to a movement inextricably linked with Marxist dogma is fundamentally flawed and misunderstands the Iranian Revolution. The Revolution was catalyzed primarily by Iranian students and their unholy alliance with the country's religious leaders. The students who kicked things off were primarily ones that had been exposed to Marx and other similar thinkers through the course of their educations abroad and had propagated it back home. The religious leaders and students only shared the common goal of freeing Iran from the influence of infidels and imperialists respectively. The students ended up being useful idiots that were quickly disposed of after the revolution though. I've stripped a lot of nuance out of things, but that's a very basic overview.

As long as the US retains basing rights in Australia, Korea, The Philippines and Japan I don't see any conflict over Taiwan getting too hot.

I've noticed it, too. In my country we're about to elect a right wing idiot because we got tired of the left fucking shit up. Which we elected because we were tired of the right fucking shit up. And we're supposed to be one of the best countries in Latin America, keep that in mind. There's just no winning here.

I just wish the best for Venezuelans. If this guy (what was his name again?) actually becomes president instead of internationally backed larping while Maduro is still in power, I'd say we shouldn't judge him if he doesn't change the situation that much. This shit will take years to fix. It's not as simple as just kicking Maduro out.

You're misunderstanding what I meant, I wasn't claiming the Shah was a useful idiot. I was saying that the students that kickstarted the revolution ended up being that for the religious leaders that took over, and was providing context for how the comparison of Shah to SJW was not apt.

Sometimes you have to make sacrifices to have prosperity. In Venezuela's case they will hopefully decide that the person to be sacrificed is Maduro.

If they do that and then do some free trade agreements and capitalist reforms the economy will start to improve.

It's like back in the Aztec times. Powerful entities exist and with the proper incantations and blood sacrifices they will grant you prosperity.

Of course Maduro needs to be kicked out asap, I'm just saying Venezuela won't be magically fixed once he's gone. Venezuela is Zimbabwe tier, going back to pre-Chávez living standards is going to take a while.

Well, at least Japan has the balls to want two aircraft carriers (the "through-deck cruisers" they're building are VTOL/STOL ships for F35), and not only that, name them the Shokaku and Zuikaku - which are the names used by two carriers that participated in the Battle of Midway.

Germany is a little less...ballsy. Although they once had a pretty decent army in the Bundeswehr, they have since dismantled it and sold off 90% of their tanks and other armor (oopsie!) They've got a middlin diesel-electric sub force, or did, anyway, and a frigate-based surface navy. Japan however has the nationalist ball bearings to say "Fuck this noise we want power projection" and are putting a few billion Yen into doing just that.

Nah. The better comparison would be Yugoslavia, Sarajevo and such. Venezuela still has a fairly well educated populace. And one that hasn't been suffering generations of deprivation such that children suffer developmental issues from consception onwards. Venezuela has people capable of picking up the pieces. It will take a good solid decade to repair the damages. But it's possible, Whereas African shitholes such as Zimbabwe have no educated base to build with. They have no entrenched culture of such. They have no industrial history, citizenry or skills to fall back on. It all must be grown there for the first time. And as we have long seen, that's not very fertile soil for such.

Actually neither of those Carriers were at Midway. Both had been damaged a few weeks earlier in the Coral Sea Battle and were in port undergoing repairs and getting more planes. Granted these were Japan's two most survivable carriers in WW2. Each took an incredible pounding over the years before finally being sunk at Leyte Gulf and the Philippine Sea respectively.
