These people don’t realize that the people they need to be worried about aren’t the ones who understand their interests are problematic and can separate fiction from reality. They put both together in one fell swoop, which is pointless and helps no one. You may want to purge the fandom of everything problematic, but you’re never gonna stop people from being interested in dark themes, in macabre, in the obscene, because it’s human interest to want to explore things. I mean hell, at least SpottyJaguar is giving a heads up to everyone and is gonna use every tool available to them to basically content-warn, and they think that’s not enough? That because they’re a big artist, they have a moral responsibility to not explore what they want to?
What sucks is that this is basically all up to be misconstrued anyway. The people who just want to get off to “problematic kinks” will get what they want, and the people who just enjoy darker themes will appreciate a favorite artist of theirs doing so, but the artist, as thoughtfully as they might explore the subjects, will still be criticized as feeding the former only. Neither side “wins,” and no one is right or wrong.
Sorry this turned into a long stream of consciousness. My point is that people need to stop trying to be fandom messiahs with their holier-than-thou truths about Right and Wrong, but they’re also right in that the shitty people who just want to get off to nasty shit get what they want. No one wins, we just all have to assume we’re grown up enough to accept that, and a lot of people in the fandom, frankly are not.
