Pretty much every family has a different mutation in the protein. That little girl seemed to have a partly functional protein otherwise she'd already be a potato.

Even better, I searched through the moms Instagram which is more recently updated and the non-potato is walking now! You go, non-potato kid.
That's what that one needs to be referred to as from now on. The non-potato kid.

In light of Claire’s passing, I decided to do something.
It’s the holiday season, and regardless of her mother’s behaviour, I want to take a moment to imagine the girl Claire could have been, had she not been born with such a debilitating condition, and to mourne the loss of that girl.
I’d like to imagine this is what she would look like in heaven, if there is one. :optimistic::feels:
I have photoshopped a photograph of her, so we can look at it and bid her farewell with emotions in mind other than horror and abject disgust.
Rest In Peace Claire.

I think this version is scarier. Simply adding a forehead and making the eyes go in the right direction would do most of work of removing evolutionary ingrained dread.

Actually this is more unsettling than her not having the majority of her brain, because then your lizard brain screams "defective child" while here she looks like her parents are probably hill people who are siblings and cousins, or what I imagine a Cro Magnon probably looked like.
A few months ago I also tried to photoshop a picture of Claire as if she'd been born normal. My photoshop skills aren't terrible, but the end result was still someone who looked like they were born with a few key genes missing.
By the time someone gets to Claire's level of messed up, it's almost impossible to make them look really normal again unless you combine their picture with so many photos of standard looking people that almost none of her actual features are left.

I did see one picture of her where someone was able to make her look like a nearly regular looking kid, but they started with a picture from when she was younger and still looked kind of cute, so they had more to work with.

I think that in the potatoes case it's better to just sketch "what could have been" drawings instead of trying to shoop lopsided goblins into human form. I didn't think of that before. When a face is trying to be normal sized on a head that doesn't really grow things get grotesque quickly.

Intergrate Claire into Eagle Eyes...

It still bugs me what a waste that device was on Claire. She wasn't able to use it to play games or paint because doing that requires some conscious thought about what you are doing. Instead the cursor sat at the bottom corner of the screen and occasionally scribbled smears of digital paint as she seized.

I once saw a documentary about people who were developing video game controllers and computer peripherals for individuals who are paralyzed or otherwise too disabled to use standard devices. I can't remember the name of the documentary. But it was really interesting how these products changed people's lives and kept them from feeling so isolated. No one in the documentary was near potato level.

Although I think that exposing Claire to unnecessary therapists that could have given her illnesses was worse. What is the point of giving her PT when she doesn't get muscle relaxants? I'm sure the therapists inquired about it since Claire must have been very difficult to move without fear of snapping something. That pic where she's laying on a bean bag by the French door beside Lola and the sick dog was very telling. She was so extremely twisted that it was inhumane.

Luckily for us, humans cannot be taxidermied. Attempts have been made, but... let’s just say they didn’t end well.

Oh, I don't know - I reckon Gunther von Hagens would do a good job! Can't go wrong with a bit of plastination.

RIP Claire. At least she's not locked up and seizing anymore. Gwen is fucking insufferable but I still feel bad for their family, questionable choices aside they were able to provide better care for the homunculi than most living kids get. Hopefully Cal is able to keep his shit together, his identity is so wrapped up in caring for his sisters that he's probably taking it pretty hard.

I find it hard to imagine Gwen genuinely crying for Claire's death. This might sound kind of mean but I don't know, something about Gwen is just as sinister as her potatoes appearances. Dad and Cal must be sad thought. I'm always on the fence on wether Cal has mixing feelings about the spuds or if he really is as concerned as Gwen wants/makes him out to be. Sometimes i'll just think back about Malibu Ken video's and how uncomfortable he seemed to be while he said how they “loved people, had feelings too and liked going out.”

I wonder what are his true feelings about them.
And like someone said above, it must have been their worst christmas so far. I can just see Gwen talking about Claire all the time during dinner, during gifts exchange, etc, etc.

Usually if someone mourns someone, they'll have stories about things they did and what they were like. What is Gwen going to do? "Remember that time she shat herself?" "Remember that time she had a seizure all day?" What is there to remember but being a complete vegetable?

Gwen always finds a way to personify their vegetables.
“Remember when I took Claire to prom, Cal's basket game, family dinners and literally everywhere they shouldn't be? Good days...”

The mother's captions are always fucking insane, but this one shows a new depth of delusion.

That progressive spastic paralysis! Those vacant unseeing eyes! That lack of cognitive functions! Those defective neurological reflexes! I can't even. #thankyougod #blessedbaby #littlemiracle #practicallyamodel

To me, its honestly heart breaking to see a picture like this one (minus the mothers absolute delusion) because you can almost glimpse a fading shade of what they might have been had they been normal.

I’m guessing Claire was buried in that completely inappropriate prom dress, because it was the night of her life. (Her eyes drifted toward the colored limo lights, so exciting. )

I don’t know what their condition does to their immune system, but it does seem taking them all those places would be bad for them. And even if they are no more susceptible to viruses than any of us, the consequences could certainly be more dire. As perhaps, we saw.

For our thread newbies, I think I should point out that despite not terminating her third child that she knew was genetically a potato, Gwen doesn’t seem to be particularly religious. She’s not a fundie who talks about the love of Jeebus all the time. I think she believes her kids lives were/are precious, but I don’t think we can even blame it on beliefs outside herself. She kept Lola because at the time, dealing with Claire didn’t seem so hard, or more likely, she lived in the fantasy that this one wouldn’t be so bad. (She blamed it on Cal saying he wanted to know her, but who includes a little child in those discussions? That’s part of her mythos) She disliked the Vika scare because of how it reflected on her choices, not because of religious beliefs. At least, I never got that sense.

They don’t seem very religious to me and I doubt we’ll get tons of angel talk now. Maybe once or twice as I don’t think they are atheist, and right after a death it seems everybody starts going that way, but it doesn’t last long. She’s not like the crazy moms who put pictures of their kids into angel wings and constantly post how they are now looking over the family.

I don’t think. We’ll see.

I don't feel that it's impossible for a sibling to love another sibling that they have spent most of their life with, even if they are profoundly disabled. I do believe he loves Claire and Lola.

However, I agree with you about Gwen. She's probably sad because she's not going to get the same amount of help and attention, but I struggle to believe that her mourning is for Claire as a "person" because I've never seen her really treat her as the real person she is. It was either humiliating her by showing her half-naked on a fucking lake shore or acting like she is an absolute super star. She never seemed to just love the kid for who she was. And I'm not saying Claire was super spectacular as a person, lol. But she deserved dignity and privacy at the very minimum and her own fucking mother couldn't even give her that. But thank goodness she always had her hair done and teeth cleaned.

lcf closed the Hartley's thread even though there's still content to talk about.

We won't close this one here until Gwen herself is gone, whether that be dead or just quitting the internet/attention seeking forever. Which very well could be a possibility to happen after she loses Lola.

Thanks. Because Lola is still around. And while I don't believe she'll be around for long she's still seizing.

I'm just wondering if Gwen will pull away from the internet or start doing double time with Lola.

Whatever she does, Cal's the one who suffers.

She wasn't actually a person. She lacked any of the things a person has that makes them a person.

I know this is late but I just noticed that Cal had to use his light saber to hold Claire’s head forward on Halloween. Look at Gwen posing for her LYFE and Claire looks so uncomfortable. I know she was just a potatoe but I swear I see pain and discomfort on her face at times like this - which is just heartbreaking.
