Image Comics fully intended to bury his pathetic excuse for a comic from the beginning. It was always intended as a sop to the woke that cost them less than, say, taking out a full-page ad in a mid-market magazine to say "we love trans women!" If Image thought for a moment that The Pervert had the potential to be even a marginally successful title, they'd have set things up very differently for its release.
Even small independent presses make sure to promote their new releases in a wide range of ways. Depending on the author, you'll usually see an array of tactics that include:
Of course, part of that is probably that when it's an independent, smaller press, the authors they promote the most are the ones who are easiest to work with and most willing to do some of the legwork themselves on publicity campaigns.
That's especially true if it's your first-ever book. It's not uncommon to see authors of niche romance novels, for instance, buying up cheap trinkets on AliExpress for promotional giveaways on social media, or paying out-of-pocket to go to some signings and events that might help them get an audience. Once you've got a core audience, you have readers who'll read everything you write and help you cross-promote it -- so it's worth it to build that, even if there's some initial cost.
But Matt's allergic to work. If there's one thing The Pervert illustrates, it's that he's one of the millions of young Americans who would rather do literally any degrading, dangerous, illegal activity than spend a single day punching a clock and listening to the opinions of co-workers who might disagree with him about politics or his precious identity.
So Image told him they'd publish his comic, spent an incredibly tiny amount of their operating budget on staying woke enough to keep bringing in the social justice dollars, and relied on Matt's lack of domain knowledge about publishing and marketing.
It worked perfectly: he seems to totally believe that the lack of success he experienced is because of the transphobic haters, not the fact that his publisher gave his release the absolute minimum possible fanfare and clearly felt embarrassed about his online activities to the point where they no longer care to work with him.

I've since become a fan of Pewdiepie this year and it's pretty fucking hilarious how much he's demonized by people who never actually watch his videos, and tell other people to never watch them either, so they can all stay in the dark about Swedish Meme Man.
It's all crying wolf. These people bandy around the word "neo-Nazi" so much that they'll launch it at people who are very clearly not because they don't buy into their particular brand of conservatism wearing liberal clothing.

I used to hate Pewdiepie.
Not for anything he himself did, but because like fucking Smosh and DSP at the time, he was everywhere and I got sick of constantly seeing his shit in my vidya feeds after Youtube fucked up how search results worked. I actually had a greasemonkey script going for a while that would remove Smosh, DSP, and Pewd's videos from my search results.
Now I'm subscribed to him, I removed him from the script, and put basically anything Youtube recommends into the slot instead. His willingness to stir shit and incapacity to give a fuck is commendable and I've found a lot of his content unexpectedly enjoyable. He's also donated ten fucktons to charity and has done a ton of work to help other people, which I can respect.
Shine on, you crazy Norweigan diamond.
