Regarding point 5: is not an indictment against the spread of free information, but a logical conclusion to make.
Accessing information has never been easier, all the stuff you could ever dream of, want to know about or simply look up for whatever reason is literally at your finger tips.
While doing rigorous research for a paper or book certainly won't diminish its quality, it is not as impressive and noteworthy as it once was, hence why going the extra mile is devalued.

Regarding point 8: Wendig really ought to listen here. Our world is becoming ever more connected and people will reject its hectic rythm from time to time. It's a very subjective opinion of Franzen, but not one to dismiss as casually as Chuck does here.
Minor :powerlevel: here. I often go on vacation to the French countryside in the summer.
I wouldn't want to live anywhere else but in midsize cities, but there is something to be said for closing yourself off from the rest of the world, including cutting off your internet.
When that constant stream of information is off limits, one can really focus on whatever it is you're doing, including writing a book. Wendig himself has constructed a shed in his backyard for this express purpose, shutting off the internet should be mandatory, especially for someone with over 250.000 tweets.

I think Franzen might of been talking about the "walk and talk" technique that's commonly used in film and television. While it's not necessarily a bad technique, plenty of people view it as a poor plot device. Some writers think it's a lazy way to write in exposition and that it cheapens plot points by making it seem like everything has to be rushed.

I love his response to this because it shows what a truly talentless and uneducated writer Wendig is. To spell it out for you Wendig: Franzen is saying that you get far more out of your characters and the plot when they aren't discussing things in a rushed matter.

It's both hilarious and saddening how actual writing advice is lost on this egoistic sped. If you listen to Franzen's advice, and you have a story worth telling, you'll end up with a solid novel that will stand the test of time. If you take Wendig's advice, even if you have a story worth telling, you'll end up with easily disposable dreck that will be very quickly lost to the ages.
