Republican Sen. John McCain, an internationally renowned Vietnam War hero who served for 30 years in the Senate representing Arizona, died Saturday due to complications stemming from brain cancer.

His office said in a statement that his wife Cindy McCain and their family were alongside him when he died.

"At his death, he had served the United States of America faithfully for sixty years," his office said.

McCain, 81, was a part of many of the past three decades' most significant political moments. He was the 2008 Republican presidential nominee in a contest he lost to President Barack Obama. He also sought the presidency in 2000, mounting a primary campaign against President George W. Bush.

A graduate of the Naval Academy, the Arizona Republican followed both his father and grandfather, who were four-star admirals, into the US Navy, where he carried out airstrike missions.

also for those of you who dont know what he did in 'nam that made him so damn infamous well here you go.

You don't have to agree with someone's politics to feel sympathetic when they die of cancer. Plus minds can change after ten years.
I understand your point but if you think that all this outpouring of grief from liberals is purely because of respect and admiration for McCain than you are far more trusting in peoples good nature than I am.

Did any of these pricks agree with McCain on anything?
Yeah. Probably. He was a hawk which the dems didn't like. But he was not a fundie and he liked his social programs. He was very much pro increased government spending on various things and not cutting taxes which earned him the ire of the GOP. But he was popular and centrists generally liked him for most of his career.

He also called out the housing boom and accounting irregularities that led to the 2008 financial crisis... in 2003. But him and others were ignored. Neither party wanted to be the one to slam the brakes on that one and be "responsible" for the resulting crash. I dunno if any dems are aware of that. It was sort of an inconvenient fact for them when he ran in 2008 against their boy Obama who promised to fix the economy that those evil republicans ruined and it got memory holed. But there it is.

Yeah, I genuinely respected the dude for voting against repealing Obamacare. And not much else. Well okay. His willingness to make sure shit got done properly his last year in Congress is something that should be applauded. It would have been far easier to just coast on through while he was dying. But, he did something dammit. I can respect that. I can disagree with him a lot. But you know. I'm not autistic and can understand that people can do both good things and bad things. Unlike most of the internet tonight. But RIP Senator.

I'm not going to pretend to be sad that an objectively terrible human being has died. I hope Ginsberg is next.

Who are these Democrats who do not like war?

I seem to recall plenty of Republicans and Democrats demanding the US invade Afghanistan....Iraq....Iraq... Grenade...Vietnam....Korea....and so on...

How do people actually give enough shit to tell difference between Democrats and Republicans. They seem same fucking thing.

Rip. A true American, and a good politician, dead.
He didn't deserve what Trump said about him awhile back, and he doesn't deserve the people celebrating his death. Who knows when we'll see another man/woman like him rise to prominence instead of the typical shitty politicians.

Hopefully they no crash plane into lake when rise so high

The only thing McCain did wrong in Vietnam was that he followed the Guidelines too closely.

Also he fly into lake, big mistake especially with such round eye.

McCain was a badass Vietnam vet who didn't play by the rules. The last of the true American heroes. Semper fi, you served your country better than Trump even.

Yes after he fly plane into lake he and very short man eat rat droppings call them jungle rice

Don't know if this is real or not, but...

You don't have to respect someone or like someone just to not feel joy at death from brain cancer.
That may be, but I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with being happy that a man, who built a decades long career in selling out his country, is now dead.

Can't exactly argue with that. History has shown that they have, at least, done things that they have accused the other party for. It kinda disgusts me to see people get animalistic over somebody that probably doesn't even know they existed.

Every person I know who goes "I don't have to feel bad for a person like him who died" has been a smug asshole tbh.
Edit: I'm only talking about since this news on John McCain came out and mutuals of mine.

The democrat voters don't. Or at least they don't like wars that last any amount of time. Or cost money. Or that people die. Or that stuff gets broken. War really sucks. I don't think that is a strictly democrat opinion.

The thing here is that politicians vote for war then play dumb real quick if it becomes unpopular. Shit, they even had ranking members on the Senate Intelligence Committee crying crocodile tears saying that they were tricked into Iraq so please vote for them to stop the war they voted for. Any way you slice it, that guy sucks at his job. Instead they nominated John Kerry for president in 2004. That's the power of going against unpopular wars and it is very tempting.

The reality is that we live in Pax Americana and the US has to throw it's weight around sometimes to keep order. It would be great if things were divided into spheres of influence and the US didn't have to shoulder so much of a burden but every time that has been tried it leads to the different spheres vying for power and a cold/hot war, which is not a good thing. Especially with nukes. So this is the way it is going to be for the foreseeable future. That means that no matter what party is in office the US is gonna get involved in some military shit. Sorry not sorry. XOXO Best regards, 'Merica World Police.

Sometimes history isn't fair when you have a traitor like McCain able to hold onto the reigns of power for so long, but someone like Barry Goldwater got tarred and feathered, life and history can be one cruel mistress.

What the hell, that was fast. It was like yesterday he announced he stopped treatment, and he just dropped dead. Its like the treatment itself was stopping his death by a few seconds. I don't know if that was from his old age, his cancer stage, or a combination of both, but that was a bit scary to think about because of how short his time was off it.

Getting taken off treatment when you've got terminal cancer is basically when your life expectancy goes to days at best. I've never seen someone in that scenario last longer than a 3 or 4 days.
