This is the way I see it: it's an unanimous thing that furries consider themselves the social outcasts, calling themselves a furry and being an active member gives a sense of this belonging to them. And that's cool and all but that gives a foundation for hugboxes. People are so piss scared to call someone out at times for serious deviant matters because there's that "I don't want to exclude someone" thing going on, so it's easier to sweep things under the rug and conform to the don't ask don't tell or you're immediately blacklisted.
About a month ago I briefly hung out with a small meetup at a con which the previous year Growly had attended. I spoke up about this and one of the guys who planned the meet up for both years immediately said "Oh! Growly is such a good guy! That thing was totally taken out of context!" Dude how is being an accessory to his boyfriend fucking a minor and being a creep to more minors at cons something to be taken out of context? I split shortly after.
