I can see that, everyone wants to be the next Bohemian, yet doesn't realise that the Bohemians were a very specific time and place and a lot of the shit they pulled back then is no longer seen as particularly weird, so they have to keep pushing themselves further to be "quirky" and "different".

People like Waid seem rotten to the core though, creepily so. It's not even the emotional reigning in, or lack there of, it's the creepy as fuck shit like leaning on a competitor, or sending a fucking wreath, or even being revealed as so fucking useless that you were made to just turn up sometimes to consult on a story (and there's no hint how much shit he did went into the comic).

He’s a comic writer. They include “tax evasion” on their CV. I think the publishers get suspicious if they aren’t getting friendly little letters from the IRS.

Daniel Vavra did a good job of being the next Bohemian in video games. But I don't think Mark Waid would get on with him well. Or most Czechs. Political correctness isn't big there.

I think one of the people I was waiting for already showed up - Ethan van Sciver. Having people with a long history in the industry and great body of work getting behind C&D. He's respected, he comes across as honest and without agenda and isn't a drama whore. I don't expect the likes of Brian Bendis to make a stand as he largely started the cancer but if names like Alex Ross, Geoff Johns or Ed Braubaker raised the issue then maybe the message would move beyond the niche level. Sadly until Marvels bottom line is severely hurt or any writer work a damn fucks off to the indys they are content to keep going in this direction.

They would just get pounced on by the same people that tried to boot EVS/JonMalin out of the industry for siding with normal people.

I like Ethan, but he is just as deeply on the spectrum as everyone else in this little three ring circus of freaks. Heck at the rate his seemingly unstoppable “Rose Tico” obsession keeps growing he will himself be threadworthy soon enough.

I hope he gets help, the Rose Tico obsession is getting a bit off putting.

As for the core issue, it’s that Marvel Comics will no longer pay for quality. So they end up with a steady parade of pink haired tumblrinas that willingly and happily seek status instead of compensation. Fleshed out by a handful of psychotic lunatics that nobody else in their right mind would ever hire. The problems at Marvel Arlen’t Caused by politucs. They are caused by Perlmutter obsessive penny pinching in the vein of a Dicken’s villain. The over the top non stop obsessive politics is the result or side effect of hiring these otherwise unhirable lowest common denominator autists.

I would say it’s a bit of both, penny pinching and politics.

You can find Marvel fans willing to work for peanuts that actually want a career in comics. A fan might not translate into great creator but there’s the willingness to learn how to improve and actual passion for it.

SJWs don’t really care about comics and want to use it as a stepping stone for other ventures like movies and tv. SJWs rarely ever make any improvement and take even the tiniest amount of criticism as a personal attack for whatever (gender/race/religion/sex) they represent.

One of the main reasons we ended up with creator owned comics in the 90s was writers were sick of writing mandated stories or having an editor step in and fucking up their run. I'm not suggesting the non danger hairs in the industry unite and form the new Image/Malibu but regardless of Jawbreakers being a good book or not it proved there's demand for books like it. If traditional comic book stores don't want to stock your books then fuck them,thats why digital distribution is a thing and randos browsing aren't going to buy a book that doesn't have a movie attached that isn't in the reduced bin.
I think UBER was atleast partially crowd funded and Ennis has done projects that way so there's a viable market outside the big two and fans will fund what they want to see.
It's not like the new star wars were we have the option to watch or not it's going to be successful with or without us because here theres a real opportunity to create new fresh IPs without being bound to the modern comic books code.

That said I know people who actually bought America on the sheer basis of it being "so shit it's funny".

i spoke to D&C a bit ago and he was pretty confident that the FTC was taking things seriously and it seems he's had more than one legal referral that are quite interested in pursuing things. who knows if this'll actually make it to court (doubt), but it'll certainly be a ride.

It depends on what you mean by "make it to court"? This isn't going to be any big "Trial of the Century" type thing. This isn't Hulk Hogan v Gawker. Lawsuits will be filed. Quiet settlements will be quickly reached. Mark Waid will likely get maced or tazed by the process server. The FTC will take it seriously and will access fines to Disney. Disney will fully cooperate, politely explain that it was a group of improperly supervised children, pay the fines and promise never to do it again. D&C will likely happily settle any lawsuit for an apology, and admission of wrongdoing and court costs. He doesn't seen to be the type to go hardcore litigant on anybody. He just seems to wants= the shit to stop and an admission that they are shitting on him.

having known D&C personally for a few years, you're right, he isn't the type to be vindictive, but he's also not the type to live and let live if he feels the other party is being handled with kid gloves. you're basically right in that he's keen on putting his comic out there because he feels like there's a market for it, that the industry is being taken apart by crazies, and that while there's a time and place for politics in comic books, doing categorically unethical or blatantly illegal things is beyond the pale. by "make it to court" i meant a trial of any sort - i have extreme doubts it would get to that, but i can see many negotiation tables and conferences to occur over liability and who said what to whom and who said a thing while possibly appearing to represent someone else.

Which is the hilarious point. Varva is most certainly not a man you'd look at and go "yes, he's a bohemian" but his game took on the current liberal establishment when they unnecessarily politicised it in an attempt to destroy what he was trying to do. The end result was nearly 2m sales on Steam alone and 1m sales across all platforms within the first two weeks. It's just a game, at the end of the day and Varva has said as much, but to "them" it's a sign of all the -isms and wrongthink. Which, ya know. Point of Bohemianism.
