On the one hand it would beyond stupid to remove Apu because of political correctness at this point. On the other hand, the show is fucking beyond dead at this stage so who honestly gives a fuck? They've altered characters or arbitrarily removed them so many times now that what impact would it have?

I'd argue the only change anyone (aside from hardcore fans) would care about at this point is if someone like Mr. Burns or Homer got removed or altered greatly. And even that probably wouldn't amount to much of anything.

Any update as to what happened to Bart's class after Mrs. K passed away?

Last I heard he had a Willem Dafoe voiced teacher that he managed to humiliate at Burning Man Festival.

Other than that, nothing. Bart just torments Groundskeeper Willie at school.

If they keep running the show into the ground, someday there won't be many characters left.

Unless they change the voice actors (and no one can tell the diddly-ifference).

Also I don't find the Apu character "offensive." I don't know how Indians perceive Apu, but it wouldn't be surprising if it's another case of "white leftists being offended on behalf of people of color" because "muh internalized racism" or bullshit like that.

Geez, can't even do normal classroom hijinks anymore. Too bad it wasn't like they did on the Dennis the Menace sitcom and it's someone related to Mrs. K that took over. Odd they just can't have a new original character in this case.

And as what's being mentioned in another thread, this is what's killing the notion of satire in our society. It's really a shame to see it happen.

The problem with that statement is that it's an Indian saying this shit. So I guess it's a "POC leftist" then.

Do you honestly expect the modern writers on the show to have anything resembling logic or effort when it comes to, well, writing? Hell, why not just cut out the school setting altogether, or at least show it less than what they do now.

Pertty much.

Which is probably the best they could do with this (I remember back when the DVD's came out they mentioned in the first season commentaries how they stopped having Homer go to work by that point as they started writing in into differente schemes he got himself into, I suppose the same could be done with the kids if they wanted).

[Santa's Little Helper drags in the enormous Sunday paper]

Homer: Good dog! Good doggie! [reads paper] Tax hike approved?! Bad dog!

One of my good friends is Indian, and he told me he's always been vaguely annoyed with Apu. Which is fair, the heavily-accented price-gouging convenience store clerk isn't a flattering portrayal. But I disagree with the perspective where you take a single character and project it as an example of his race. Both when complaining about "problematic" portrayals and when you use it to justify your own racism

Yeah, like it's one thing to express your opinion. Like if you don't like Apu, then fine, more power to you. It's another to be so offended that you need to make a fucking 90 minute documentary about said character insulting all Indians and have all the (white) SJWs bandwagon with your opinion and make things 100 times worse.

And that is what happened here, and no doubt it won't be the last.

So we have SJWs to thank for the further ruin of an already ruined enough show. Understood perfectly - especially since I know from back when the show was still watchable for me, Apu was a much more developed character than these neo hippie fuckers make him out to actually be, too.

It's a shame when they think they have a 'voice' in mainstream entertainment.

TBH the show hasn't been good in years, honestly, so if this gets the series cancelled at last I don't think it'd be much of a problem. I mean, if the series is going on so long to the point that characters have to be written out due to being considered problematic or because their voice actors died, then it's a warning sign the show should be ending already.

At this point the only two forces that can stop the show is Death and Rupert Murdoch, and Rupert has very little reason to do so when The Simpsons is still quite a profitable franchise.

I kind of wonder how profitable The Simpsons is. I mean the show itself, not its cottage industry of marketing tie ins. It says something that they're still giving life support to a show that a good portion of people acknowledge was only good for about 1/3 of its run so far. If the Simpsons weren't a familiar and marketable brand they'd have been out years ago. Instead the show itself is a shambling corpse of what it once was.

Oh well. At least King of the Hill ended on a high note.

It's like they forget that (1) Apu isn't the only character from India, and (2) The Simpsons makes fun of everything.

Also they made some deliberately caricature characters -- like Groundskeeper Willie -- but they're of white peoples, so no one really complains, and everyone realizes they're meant to be funny rather than "offensive."

Even then, only the death of one of the big 4 would really kill it. My money's on Kavener. She sounds like a ghoul.
