After decades of relegating its LGBTQ characters to the sidelines, Marvel really turned things around with America and Iceman, its first two ongoing series featuring queer characters as their titular leads. Both books have been important additions to Marvel’s ever-expanding portfolio, but it seems as if the time has come for at least one of them to end. March’s comics solicitations are out this week and a number of titles including America are conspicuously missing, which heavily implies that the titles have been canceled. This afternoon, Marvel editor Heather Antos confirmed that Gwenpool, another title missing from the March solicits, was definitely canceled, further suggesting that any titles missing from the lineup as of today are done for.

You have to wonder if anyone in Marvel took business 101.

"If you have a core audience who will buy literal shit if it has your branding on it for the love of god don't alienate them!"
Thing is: it would be perfectly fine to also pander to loud-mouthed SJWs with some of their comics.
However what Marvel obvioulsy didn't realize, no matter how clear the signs and how often it already happened: Loudmouthed Tumblr-Spergs are not a massive market.
They are a niche. Again: Catering to a niche with a part of your stuff isn't a bad business decision.

Where this shit all fell apart spectacularly, was when they decided to pander to SJWs with everything they did. That niche is nowhere near big enough to be profitable that way, and when every brand you put out is some gender-special brown skinned muslim Mary Sue, you will lose a fuckton of sales.
Not only will you piss off all those long-time fans, but your products will also start to cannibalize one another, since SJW will (at best) buy a couple of series - not all of them.

We're barely scratching the surface of the Social Justice virus but hey, any time you spend telling these people to kill themselves is time well spent.

Marvel the moment.

Good riddance - SJWs don't really read comics, as it is, and most actual readers hated these comics (overall), to begin with.

The problem to somewhat solve this would be to introduce the "niche" character for a good year or two via other more popular lines, make them a sidekick or what have you for a while, give them a storyline and let them develop and "mentor" under one of the better stables and really develop as a character, heck, even get them wearing and "standing in" for the big hitter at times as they try and grow.

Then have them finally branch out with their own identity give them a new neighbourhood of town/city to patrol (I'd love to see a more rural superhero having to bounce around stopping disasters in the Midwest and how exhausting that would be, for example).

Oh, wait, I just described Dick Grayson didn't I?

You'd get idiots claiming the characters are being patronized. If they aren't immediately good at everything and shown punching Hitler by issue 2, then it's a lost cause.

I am not a believer in giving LGBT/POC content in comics brownie points just for having LGBT/POC content at all. I also don't trust an entity like Marvel to be able to pull off a nuanced character like that.

If you want good LGBT/POC characters, read Love and Rockets. Or don't, since it's written by a man who hasn't started his HRT yet.

The amount of concern that the modern left has towards character sexuality is on par with Republicans circa 2006 when they would see a gay character in films.

Still fucking better than what Marvel does / was doing with SJW BS. And that's keeping in mind that DC isn't completely better off (despite avoiding this BS Marvel's doing, outright.) - although why I say that is a completely different story entirely.

Marvel is a bloated mess, all of their team-based titles are so confusing and overcrowded because they've got too many superfluous characters and keep crossing over with other teams in an effort to drum up interest and circulate recognisable faces. Who the fuck even had the time or money to read all of Secret war/empire/whatever? Why are there two Captain Americas, two Iron-men, god knows how many spider-related-people and at least two Deadpools? If their main series weren't so over populated, they'd be able to give each character enough space that a stand-alone comic wouldn't even be necessary.

The best Avengers period was when there were 4-5 regular members and they had stand-alone confrontations with regular enemies. In comparison- I've been reading Uncanny Avengers and not only is the artstyle fantastically irregular and off model from issue to issue, but there are anywhere from 7-10 characters featured in any one book and there simply isn't page-space to give everyone some screentime. As such a bunch of older and established characters are being pushed into the background or dragged out as a punchline before being forgotten again. What happened to characterisation arcs? There was one instance that really bugged me, where Quicksilver got dramatically mind-raped by the Red Skull, only to be absolutely fine the next issue. Apparently it wasn't as important as Rogue and Deadpool fucking each other.

The sad thing is that some really good titles have come out in the past couple years. Avengers: Millenium was great, Scarlet Witch was beautifully drawn and had some really poignant moments and Cable and X -force was generally fun and lighthearted. Even some of the Deadpool titles were a good read, once they got away from trying to make him seem sympathetic and damaged. They seem to think that everyone has to be good, no once can have any irredeemable flaws in their character, not if they're popular and especially not if they're a woman/black/gay/whatever.

I think they should do what DC did, scrap the whole universe and reboot it. It's drastic but following the main continuity now is like watching a quadraplegic try to climb stairs. That being said DC should also be ashamed- Midnighter and Apollo was rubbish.

Holy shit, Marvel makes so autistically mad.

All I can say is

Face it, the books did not sell. The people they were made to appease don't care about comics. They just want their SJW ideology inserted into anything and everything people love because feelings and muh diversity.

“Most of these were subpar at best, yeah, but HOW DARE YOU MARVEL”
Full thread here, it’s funny how many of the people whining about the cancellations openly admit to never having actually bought the damn comics. Looks like this could generate some good salt.

Don't complain about cancellations if you never supported the comics in the first place. You'd think that these people would buy them since they are the ones that wanted to be pandered to in the first place. They don't seem to understand how this works. If no one buys the comics they will be canceled because they aren't making any profit.

Gwenpool was cancelled? *sigh*, I liked that series.
As for everything else, good. Marvel has had two opportunities to reboot the whole universe (Secret War, and Secret Empire, both of which were really good). So it’ll be interesting to see if they do reboot the universe.

If the SJWs care so much, why aren't they making and circulating their own comics? They don't have the burden of being gigantic corporate titans like Marvel, they can afford to experiment more with niche subject matter that all the q-pocs will surely buy and support. After all, they have indie video games full of socjus themes and moralizing on steam; they mostly suck balls but the people who care seem willing to put their effort where their mouth is there and actually try to make them at least.

...I guess a potential answer to my question is that the world does have socjus comics in the form of webcomics, which are full to the brim with "artists" like Jeph Jacques writing dull crap that only serves the purpose of checking off as many diversity boxes as it can. Is that enough to explain why people who bitch about Marvel don't actually put up anything?

Geez, any examples?

Iceman8cover.jpg

This turd contains all three of the elements I mentioned, fired off at machine gun speed with no time to breathe. The fact that it focuses on Iceman having lunch at what appears to be an Olive Garden is its most entertaining aspect.

I'm sad to see Gwenpool go. Not because I liked the comic, but because it seemed to focus primarily on entertaining the reader rather than providing a form of therapy for neurotic, antifa SLGBTQ's.

The thing about Jeph is he's actually made a success of it, and doesn't seem like an ass who rams it down your throat non-stop, I legit did not give a shit when it turned out one of the characters was Trans and indeed the characters around it largely operated on unbased fears and presidencies of them jumping at their own shadows. Questionable Content is supposed to be somewhat dull as it's everyday life for some people who own a shitty coffee shop. It works and there's clearly enough of a dedicated audience to actively support Jeph to the tune of about $5.5k a month.

Of course the reality is that SJW ideology is either chock full of medicore artists and storytellers who fetishise those traits to the point it overrides all other rational thought. This is why the majority of "original" stuff like that is utter garbage and thus wouldn't sell because rather than being a story or character they're too busy screaming like the mentally ill loons they are. The market then finds they don't want to buy the product from the screaming moron and thus carry on to the "white dudebro" making the same safe but fun stuff they always do.

SJW culture does not create it's own, it parasitizes and colonizes existing culture on a poorman's basis of "me too" to try and make a quick buck from the normies who actually fund the wider cultural outputs like comic books.

Isn't it funny how smug these assholes used to be when it was about Thor being turned into a lesbian jiddish-speaking leprechaun from Mogambia-bin-gluck-luck with a Hijab, and how they were taking over comics books from the dudebro cishet Trump-voting nerds and that said nerds are assholes for pointing out how aweful all these new comics lines were... and suddenly the same nerds, that were insulted before are now being blamed for these new comics to fail as if it was their duty to support "Diversity" or some shit?

It's not much different to the time Chris was e-begging us for all of those donations for LEGO kits in exchange of possibly changing his opinion on us. We're expected to just take the abuse and buy these so-called "diverse" comics and be content with at best, being considered "one of the good ones" when they make a point to insult people like us within earshot.

TL;DR, No one told them they can catch more flies with honey than vinegar. So they stupidly throw vinegar at the flies and wonder why nothing sticks.

What they don't understand is most flies don't hate themselves enough to drink the vinegar and call it fine wine like they do.

They make and circulate their own comics and games in the indie scene and then claim that Haters (read: white guys) are outright trying to prevent them from making anything at all, shouting them down and harassing them online until they break down into a puddle of tears.

Of course, all the time they spend being endlessly negative on their own feeds is ireelevant.

They really should have done this when the movies started getting really popular. Marvel missed so many sales because they drove away people who just watched Avengers and wanted to buy a comic or two out of curiosity. Imagine a casual movie fan asking for the latest Iron Man and getting a comic that stars a black teenage girl instead of an RDJ lookalike. They'd just walk out of the store and never come back.

One point I would add is that now the almost-immediate outing of Cebulski's Japanese alias shenanigans makes complete sense now, as it took him less than a month to BTFO nearly all the moronic titles like a normal person doing their job. The SJW wing was simply trying to set him up as the bad guy before those decisions took effect.

Also, this thread doesn't cover the changes that didn't involve cancellations, like the moronic Dan Slott being removed from Amazing Spider-Man for example.

Squirrel Girl? Domino? The Runaways?
From what I know, The Runaways was almost always under threat of cancellation, that's the reason the plot was moving like a rocket.

Only the TPB sales managed to keep it going this far.

That's because the X-Men got railroaded hard due to the MCU rising in popularity, which coincidentally, was around the same time the SJW thing really began to take off. There's plenty of conspiracy theories, but the most popular one being that Ike Perlmutter forced that intentionally to mess with Fox over a pissbaby slapfight over movies. But nothing has ever been 100% confirmed.

Either way, the X-Men's message is kind of moot at this point. It's always been an allegory for some kind of civil rights issue even from Racism, sexism, homophobia (complete with an AIDS-esque allegory called the Legacy Virus), etc. But when you have a dozen plus comics trying to parrot similar messages, well, the X-Men became kind of redundant or obsolete.
Actually, those rumors are true, look around and tell me how many new X-Men characters have been created in the last 5-7 years? Almost none, because apparently Perlmutter ordered them to not create new content that can be utilized by Fox in their movies, since they held the rights to all X-Men characters. He also tried to push the Inhumans as a replacement, which was crowned by arguably the worst TV series of this year of the same name.

Oh, wait, I just described Dick Grayson didn't I?
The inherent problem here is that you will get people who complain about those woke queer POC characters always being under the white man.

Though I would second that suggestion only for the deluge of salt we'll get: "REEEE Batman is mansplaining and it's problematic"

Thing is: it would be perfectly fine to also pander to loud-mouthed SJWs with some of their comics.

They could have had around 3-4 titles catering to that crowd and found some decent success, eventually paving the way for more, but SJWs are always about attaining big influence ASAP, and will always try to find their way to the top-shelf stuff.

To me, SJWs do the worst kind of service to those characters, since they trivialize their everyday struggles in favor of "empowerment".

All I can say is

Face it, the books did not sell. The people they were made to appease don't care about comics. They just want their SJW ideology inserted into anything and everything people love because feelings and muh diversity.

"B-But, I retweeted so many Twitter threads!"

One thing that needs to be mentioned is the absolute lack of care those people had for their jobs, there were multiple instances where a book would launch or release new issues, and its creators wouldn't even boost it on their blue-checkmark accounts, instead tweeting about Trump or whatever, in some cases, they professed to not even knowing when those books would hit the shelves! The only way you can understand such incompetence is by realizing that those people were contented by simply being on those books and mangling those characters to fit their political views.

In other words, failure is an inevitability with SJWs at the helm.

I hate comics/books/movies that set their focus on LGBT or sjw topics in general. I'm gay and when I read a comic/book, I want to read a good story (not about some queers not being able to find a big dick) the same way straight people want to read a good story and not a comic about a straight white man complaining about race autism the whole time. Marvel doesn't seem to get that most LGB-T people don't give a fuck how they're represented in fiction, they just want to be entertained. So give us entertainment and stop trying to appeal to me by producing snowflake comics.
