CLIFFSIDE PARK -- Dozens of students walked out of classes in protest at Cliffside Park High School on Monday, days after a video of a teacher telling children to "speak American" appeared on social media.

Around 11:30 a.m., a fire alarm was pulled and hundreds of students came outside the school accompanied by staff members.

Some students in this heavily-Hispanic district enthusiastically waved flags symbolizing their heritage as cheers went up from crowds gathered outside.

"Men and women are fighting. They are not fighting for your right to speak Spanish," the teacher says in the video. "They are fighting for your right to speak American."

Kleidon Ndreu, president of the high school student council, said Monday a closed-session board of education meeting was planned to discuss the incident.

"It's very premature," Ndreu told a throng of news media outside the school. "We need to let the administration do what it is going to do. They are taking this very seriously."

Schools superintendent Michael J. Romagnino has not yet commented on the uproar created by the video or its fallout.

"We won't have any comment until we research both sides of this situation," said Louis Alfano, the district's business administrator. Alfano said he expected the board would release a public statement in the coming days.

Some students said they were hurt by the yet-to-be publicly identified teacher's words.

"It's wrong and it hurt me a lot," said Wagner Vasquez, 15, whose family came here from the Dominican Republic. "A lot of people here are hurt."

Anthony Campos, 16, said he saw the video on Snapchat minutes after it was posted.

"Coming from an English teacher -- saying to speak American -- that was just stupid," Campos said.

Students groan as the unidentified female teacher says, "you want to leave, be disrespectful" and one boy gets up from his desk and exits the frame. The woman then says, "goodbye, goodbye," as the camera pans to the door where at least one student seems to be exiting the classroom.

Cliffside Park's population is about 28 percent Hispanic, according to census figures.

I never understand the walking out of school or job protests. Unless a union is forcing you to strike, the only person you are hurting when you boycott school/work is yourself.

Students participating in a walk out is simple enough to understand; they simply want to skip classes, and they have a social acceptable excuse to do so.

If these fags weren't all concentrated into their designated shitskin school, Generation Zyklon would take care of them in a second.

Funny that we have all these optimistic hopes of having a universal language when stuff like this keeps happening.

In ENGLISH class. Although an English teacher should know better than to say "speak American", as that's not grammatically correct. :P

Seriously though, why were they having a personal conversation during class to begin with? You're not supposed to be chatting during class.

They were probably arranging a drug deal.

You know, there is a gap between what is acceptable in schools or universities and what is acceptable in a company or corporation.
There always was somewhat of a difference between the two, but pupils and students could always easily adapt since the general basic idea was the same.
Nowadays, this gap widens and has reached sizes that you simply can't bridge that easily thanks to the wishywashy bullshit of "never offend anybody" politics.

Point in case: Students that learn that it's totally acceptable to walk out of the room and refuse to do work if they chant slogans and wave flags cause someone hurt their fee-fees.
Do these clowns expect to be able to do the same on the job?

Students that simply have no fucking clue how the world works and who think they can just force their bullshit down other people's throats (even if they are their direct superiors).

Some time ago, we had a thread on a group of students doing an internship at some company who wrote a petition to their boss cause they wanted to wear more casual clothes - cause apparently it's just not sensible to hold interns up to similar standards as the regular employees.
The guy who runs the company fired every single intern that signed th petition on the spot, IIRC.

This kind of spirit is what ruins schools and universities. When the administration bends to some losers "hurt feelings" over nothing, the school is going to become worthless.
Wouldn't surprise me if certain companies would slowly start to secretly blacklist certain universities cause their students are just mentally unable to do their fucking job.

I believe the general consensus here was that that guy gave them a better education than their shitty school in how the real world works.

Let them try to walk out of their cubicle (or the McFries station if they're majoring in gender studies) because the boss or a co-worker triggered them in some way. Let's see how fast their asses get fired for causing a spectacle and refusing to do their job because of feelings.

These students are literally saying that the entire reason they walked out was hurt feefees.
"It's wrong and it hurt me a lot," said Wagner Vasquez, 15, whose family came here from the Dominican Republic. "A lot of people here are hurt."

I got an owie in my feelysads and now I can't do any classwork.:(

This is the future of America. Kids walking out of classes not because of war or civil rights. But because feefees were hurt and feefees are the most important thing ever. I'm not saying we should all be staunchly logical Vulcans 24/7. But you need a balance between feelings and logic in order to make accurate judgements in your life. But here we have a weepy crybaby generation that is triggered by everything and throws tantrums over the slightest offense. It's time to tell them to sit down and shut up. These are the people who will be making laws and taking care of us in our old age. And even the ones in high school and college aren't any more emotionally mature than a toddler who doesn't understand how to handle their emotions yet.

As usual, both "sides" need to be taken out to an unused field and have the sense soundly beaten back into them. There's no such language as "American" and any teacher who needed to be told that wouldn't be teaching at my school. Furthermore, we are not a federally mandated multi-language country (official language is still English) and thus any lingual services catering to these entitled shits is to be viewed with a certain amount of gratitude rather than the scorn some of them obviously feel.

Yeah I gotta side with the students on this one, at least to a point.
"Men and women are fighting. They are not fighting for your right to speak Spanish," the teacher says in the video. "They are fighting for your right to speak American."
That’s fucking stupid, and if the people I was entrusting my education to thought it was something worth hearing in the classroom I’d leave too.
Point in case: Students that learn that it's totally acceptable to walk out of the room and refuse to do work if they chant slogans and wave flags cause someone hurt their fee-fees.

If they wind up in a union they’ll be able too. I do agree that they need to learn that there are risks and consequences to doing that though.

I'd be pretty fucking offended if someone tried to tell me what languages I had the "right" to speak. Yes, students in America should learn fluency in English. But I would walk out on this teacher too.

I especially like how this teacher takes it for granted that no one in the armed forces speaks spanish or wants other people to speak spanish. Learning to think critically is an important part of a solid education. If the educator can’t do it what fucking good are they.

If they don't want to speak english, they can go back to Mexico.
this reminds me of when my goverment class made us watch this video about spics doing a walkout to promote civil rights, and the students were mortified to discover that students were punished for speaking spanish back then.
They would cheer for the cholo kid who would speak spanish to defy the teacher.

Come on, guys. Telling spics to speak American clearly was successful trolling, even if unintentional and from an English teacher.

just deport the fucking spics, they have no hopes of adapting and bring nothing to the table. I bet you that most of them can't even speak english right without their iconic spic slur
