An earthquake of a preliminary magnitude of 8.0 struck off the coast of Chiapas, Mexico, late on Thursday local time, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) said, citing USGS data.

The PTWC said that hazardous tsunami waves were possible within the three hours following the quake along some coasts of Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama, Honduras and Ecuador.

The quake woke me up last night. It didn't feel that strong, so I expected it to be a) local and b) about a 6.5 on Richter's scale.

Wrong on both accounts, it seems. Local news say nobody's died yet.

The death toll in Mexico rose up 32.

The death toll from Mexico's huge earthquake has risen to 32.

Oaxaca state Gov. Alejandro Murat told local news media Friday that at least 23 people in his state died after the magnitude 8.1 quake that hit just before midnight.

Civil defense officials say at least seven people died in the state of Chiapas, which borders Guatemala. Two others died in the Gulf coast state of Tabasco.
The same was said about the one in Japan that fucked up Fukushima, what creates Tsunamis is chunks of underwater land mass falling away creating a wave void votex and smoothly rising continental shelf that turn a big wave into something much larger, the problem with them is they are unpredictable but are likely to happen a week after a earth quake.
Local governments were bracing for a tsunami just a few hours ago, but the sonographic scan thingies say it's unlikely at this point. Ports are working as usual.

Next thing we know, the Mexicans will surf over here
