Meme elitists are people who take memes WAY too seriously, to the point of attacking and sometimes even doxxing people who they consider normies simply because they used a meme, and made it unfunny.
R/dankmemes is problably the one with the biggest community of these kinds of people, theres also other sites such as 9gag and 4chan that have them.

They even have an economy for memes

Imagine growing up with zero culture and having the internet and memes fill that gap.

Ow... The feels.

If normies are using your meme then it stopped being funny a long time ago and you didn't realize it because you're a normie.

Fuckin' normies dude smdh.

memes are meant to bring people together to share a laugh with

not a tool to start war
I agree, but I'm not surprised. People will always look for something to argue and hate others over, no matter how ridiculous it is.

What happens is edgy teens/college students on reddit think they made a meme and either didn't or it's just unfunny garbage and shitpost it until their meme subreddit gets big enough the "meme purists" split off to shitpost somewhere else or until a meme specific sub dies slowly. A surprising amount of adults sperg about this in an effort to avoid ever growing up. But OP, damn, you have to give a bit more of the autism behind this internet slap fights.

Actually that just made me realize, does reddit make any memes? I know they used to steal everything from 4chan, but now everything I see is either from tumblr or (rarely) facebook.

The fights are so vicious because the stakes are so small.

Added a few more links to OP

  • Normies
  • Appropriation of meme culture
  • 'YTP is Art'
Behind the Meme got plenty of hate comments and videos before this (deservedly because his content is tripe, but that doesn't mean his detractors are any better), but this video in particular is what triggered the summer-long dogpile that eventually led to someone doxing Behind the Meme's grandma. He had the perfect timing to catch all the 14 year olds with bleach avatars as they were getting out of school ready to shit up the internet. And what a perfect guy to have inspired them to do it.
