But it was also still a complete waste of a budget, because it was a porn film, and it was fucking awful. It's obvious they didn't spend the money on the actors, because they were terrible and were a big part of the reason the film was fucking awful. Scorsese these fuckers ain't. I doubt any of the people who put (genuinely good) hard work into the production went on to mainstream success outside the adult film industry (or within it, for that matter). Good for them if they did, but I doubt it was "worth it" for most people involved. Probably some fun stories to tell the kids at Christmas though (once they'd grown up, anyway).

Some changes in pornographic production were for the better. Do you know why they initially tried to make "legitimate films that happened to also have scenes featuring hardcore fucking" instead of "videos of people fucking"? Because they were meant to be shown in theaters (we didn't have VCRs or DVD/BluRay players back then). Seedy theaters, yes, but there was an attempt at an air of "theatrical merit" to them, thinly-veiled as it was. At least at first.

About twenty or thirty nanoseconds after the first pornographic film opened in the first pornographic theater, literally fucking everybody realized the guys just showed up in sparse numbers, spread themselves apart from each other as much as possible in the theater, and waited (bored) through the non-porn stuff to get to the scene(s) they wanted to see, did their "business," and walked back out (almost always before the film ended).

"Oh derp, people want to see sex, not plot." Ironically the porn filmmakers were the last people on earth to comprehend this message, but they did ultimately figure it out. Some of them really didn't want to let go of their artisan aspirations. I don't know how anybody tolerated listening to that annoying faggot Jamie Gillis blathering on about ... whatever it is coked-out art fags babbled about while watching attractive people fuck ... in his later appearances in film, and if you pay much attention while comparing those "mighty theatrical entries of old" to the modern "Shlomo Shekelstein presents Two Girls Fucking Eight Niggers™" production, you'll notice a lot of not-really-very-well-hidden gay coding all over the old "heterosexual/mainstream" porn films on top of everything else, too. There was a lot of closeted homosexuality in the 70's, including in the adult film industry, and they couldn't keep their mouths shut or keep it out of straight porn to save their lives.

All the most famous mainstream porn films from the 70's focused on the male characters in the non-pornographic scenes, and even during the scenes, there was an unfortunate and disproportionate amount of attention focused on them (pay attention to how often directors cut back to the dude's face or ass during sex scenes, especially the classic "workin' hard" and "O" faces, with surprisingly little focus given to the women's bodies). So many classic films and scenes with some of history's most stunningly beautiful women were all but ruined by endless obnoxious cuts from stuff straight men wanted to see (sexy women having sex) to the ugly, fur-covered morons doing the thrusting.

At least in the modern shit things are segmented away such that if you're a closet fag who wants to watch gay-coded straight porn, you at least have your own options (like hotguysfuck.com or seehimfuck.com) that don't contaminate the actual mainstream. There's no plots or sets or acting of any kind, and the camera work is often god-awful, but at least you can finally get a good look at the damn women. This explanation is why I don't really with the conspiracies about porn being pushed as some sort of agenda. Internet porn is free because that's just the economics of making any sort of media on the Internet. YouTube is free, Soundcloud is free, countless blogs and news sites and forums are free. There's a segment of people who just like to make stuff for its own sake and the Internet with its low cost of distribution has unleashed them. Competition against those enthusiasts creates a race to the bottom where the dominant model is free-to-play/watch/listen, and the actual money comes from monetizing a core fanbase and a handful of whales.

All of this is amplified with porn, because it's incredibly cheap to produce, needing just a camera, a man, and a woman. People will just post their sex tape online with no expectation of making any money whatsoever, because they're perverts who get off on it. That cannot be as excessively common as would be required for the sheer magnitude of content of that style that comes out. There's just no fucking way.
