When you are flying, entirely different rules apply. Unless you are a US Air Marshall, or some other higher end federal officer, you CANNOT have a firearm with you on the plane. Period, end of discussion. You can have it in a checked bag, but it has to be declared and has to be inspected. It also has to be cased, unloaded, and locked in a gun carrying case.

That's what it looked like to me as well. Field stripping and reassembly doesn't take very much time and can easily be done in an airplane bathroom, and to top it off he had ammunition. This is an absolutely unacceptable risk for a flight.
