I see this kind of behavior a lot at work when dealing with companies doing illegal shit. Employees seem to have this delusional notion that they are protected from the consequences, that everything will fall at the feet of their employer and that they can hand wave away any wrong doing by claiming they were just doing what they were told. One of the more recent companies was an auditing practice so dodgy a blind man could have seen it. Tax fraud, fraudulent financial statements where they'd sign the AFS off without even preparing the file and the partner was as useless as Jer at hiding all this stuff. Point is all the staff knew about what was going on, knew what the consequences would be when it all came to light and yet still chose to bury their heads in the sand because it was easier than finding a new job, doing the right thing or giving up a overinflated paycheck.
