Yeah, and it wasn't just Himmler who wanted him gone: several other ranking Nazis wanted Roehm out of the way of their own ambitions, the German officer caste was enraged by Roehm's plans to flood their beloved army with the brawling rabble which comprised the majority of the SA, the Junkers and wealthy businessmen were threatened by Roehm's genuine belief in the socialist parts of the Party platform (which Hitler understood to be mere talking points to attract the support of the working class, and never to be actually enacted)...

Roehm managed to piss off just about every power centre in Germany such that Hitler had no choice but to be rid of him, and even then, he had to essentially talk himself into it. Hitler was probably closer to Roehm than anyone else, and historians note that he was the only person whom Hitler addressed by the more familiar German pronoun "du".

It wasn't just "brawling rabble." Roehm considered homosexuality the highest form of masculinity, and his SA was basically one giant fagfest. He wanted to put the SA at the head of the Army specifically to make the Wehrmacht gay, inspire all the soldiers to be more gay, and make gayness the apotheosis of the Teutonic warrior spirit.
