It didn’t work, but that’s why it had to become a delusion. Because if 2010’s shitlibbery claimed to be anything, it was the union of the experts and the common man. Think “The life of Julia.” So if you’re going to live your life in that moment, trying to bring back that old 2009 magic? You can’t ever admit that the Obama administration dragged out the recovery or that there was a recession and rampant inflation under Biden. To do so is to admit to yourself that you believed a lie and once that’s gone? So is the entire framework through which you make sense of the world. And so he launches into vibecessions and esoteric Bidenism.

Unfortunately for our boy, that’s no longer good enough. Now, if you don’t constantly amplify the crowd and be angry about a genocide that they were yelling about before October 7th and after the ceasefire and so he becomes the stand in for ICE and all of those nazis that they can never seem to find. That doesn’t cut it anymore. Singing the praises of left wing economic policy doesn’t cut it anymore. Recontextualizing things like inflation as something that you need to read a white paper to properly suss out is just going to infuriate your supposed friends and Allie’s.

(But really I'm making the same mistake that Will is making, which is acting as if the words these people are saying have meaning. The fact that Will cannot understand that is part of what makes him so amusing. He's not entirely wrong here. Feelings about the overall economy is largely based on vibes. It's about 60% vibes, 40% personal experience.

The press kept telling us that the "jobless recovery" under Obama was great, and people believed it. The press told us to bubble from the functionally negative interest rates under Trump were terrible, but for many it was personally fucking great; especially if you financed something at a fixed rate or were invested in something inherently deflationary. The were both ultimately terrible (but in different ways).

That's the thing, he's never gotten disillusioned with the Obama years. He is likely in a position where jobless recovery from the 2007 financial crisis never affected him. He's probably an MSNBC default liberal who never grew out of religiously watching Olbermann, Maddow, Hayes, and O'Donnell.
