TOKYO, March 26 (Reuters) - A female employee at a Pokemon merchandise shop was stabbed to death in Tokyo's commercial complex on Thursday, and the suspected assailant also died ‌after stabbing himself, shocking shoppers during children's spring break season in Japan.
The woman, in her 20s, was stabbed in her neck at 7:16 p.m. local time (1016 GMT) in a shopping mall by a man also in his 20s, the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department said. Both were pronounced dead at a hospital within an hour, police said.

Broadcaster TV Asahi said the woman was a store clerk of the Pokemon Center in the building and the perpetrator was wielding knives in both hands.
Before Thursday's incident, police had received complaints from a person, believed to be the deceased woman, over alleged stalking, the Asahi newspaper reported.
Videos posted on social media showed shoppers running away from the site as ambulances converged on the building, located just a few hundred meters distant from the Ikebukuro ‌terminal, one of the busiest train stations in Tokyo.
The store was crowded with apparently more than 100 customers, including many children and foreign tourists, before the sounds of falling shelves and a woman screaming "help!" could be heard, a witness who fled the scene told Asahi.

Pokemon Co, which operates about two dozen stores in Japan selling merchandise from the popular franchise, said the store in Ikebukuro and its adjacent “Pikachu Sweets” cafe would be closed until further notice.
“We will prioritise our full cooperation with the police and our staff’s physical and mental care,” the company said in a statement on its website.
Strict gun controls in Japan mean knife attacks are a more common form of public violence, with multiple stabbing incidents on trains and at railway stations in the past few years.

Orientals must be kept in their native East till the fall of the white race. Sooner or later a great Japanese war will take place, during which I think the virtual destruction of Japan will have to be effected in the interests of European safety. The more numerous Chinese are a menace of the still more distant future. They will probably be the exterminators of Caucasian civilisation, for their numbers are amazing. But that is all too far ahead for consideration today.

I don't mean to downplay sexual harassment, but last time I checked, sexual harassment has 100% survival rate, unlike murder, which has a 0% survival rate
I think the issue is that sexual harassment is very normalized there and it's a behavior that tends to escalate. The police had the chance to stop this early but didn't take it seriously. I know everyone's jaded by #metoo, but these are the consequences that happen when the onus of safety is put on the woman experiencing the harassment.

Is it really that hard to believe some people that aren't dark-skinned act like this?
I have no idea why people are treating this as if this incident is like a massive terrorist attack or some indictment of Japanese society.

It literally is just some crazy guy who killed his girlfriend because he's fucking crazy and its like the escalation of domestic problems. There are no "socio economic factors", no amount of "retvrning to tradition" or whatever that can prevent this from happening.

It just happened to be at at a relatively public area at the girlfriend's workplace which happens to be in a Pokémon Center, in Ikebukuro, which is basically the new Akihabara once that place got gentrified by tourists. Ofc it is high profile on the news but only because it happened at such a visible place.

Had he go home to his girlfriend's pad and kill her and himself, this wouldn't even be a blip. Its just unfortunate though that all of her coworkers and friends at work will 100% traumatized from this incident. Not to mention even the customers and any children present since Pokémon is a all-ages franchise.

Calling him an "killer incel" is bullshit, HE LITERALLY HAS A GIRLFRIEND. HE IS DOING BETTER THAN 50% OF JAP MEN HIS AGE!

You really do hear it a lot, regardless of country, that a stalker wasn't taken seriously by police before it was too late. I wonder the reason why? Is it really just lack of evidence of a crime because Japan is famous for their high conviction rate and not always worrying about if they got the right guy or not. I don't know, stalking is a crime and seems pretty easy to get evidence for on the victims part. Makes me wonder if its a high volume of cases of this type or just a general lack of care or maybe too many false positives. Stalking never just goes away once someone get their hooks in so I just would like some hard data, why do police so often ignore it?
Like always, petty bitches that abuse the system and thus make the life of everyone else harder.
The amount REPORTED. Reported is the really important word there. Japan is a shame based culture. They rarely report.
Yeah no one wants the moniker of "Used Goods".

It is spring vacation. In the middle of the day when children are most outside playing or shopping with parents. Pokemon Center Ikebukuro is the largest and most popular Pokemon Center store in the world.

From Maslow’s Psychology of Science:
“I remember seeing an elaborate and complicated automatic washing machine for automobiles that did a beautiful job of washing them. But it could do only that, and everything else that got into its clutches was treated as if it were an automobile to be washed. I suppose it is tempting, if the only tool you have is a hammer, to treat everything as if it were a nail.”

You have the usual suspects come into these threads and shout “Jeet!” “Nigger!” “Incel!” “Japs!” because they can only analyze the world from the limited perspectives they happened to take from their favorite websites or e-daddies. Thinking is hard.

The criminal was not actively dating the woman. She had filed a retraining order three months ago. She filed complaints with Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department about stalking. https://news.livedoor.com/topics/detail/30858143/

The criminal refused couseling and medical intervention. https://news.livedoor.com/topics/detail/30857379/

Both man and woman taken to hospital for treatment. Both did not survive.

For some reason, news media is using a middle school photo of the victim.

Video describing how the attack happened with 3D models and events leading to attack. Youtube provides auto-dubbing to listen in English.

Japanese audio only:

On the night of the 26th, a female store employee was stabbed to death by a man at Sunshine City in Ikebukuro, Tokyo. The man was the woman's ex-boyfriend and had been arrested in December of last year for stalking. Police continued to be vigilant, issuing orders prohibiting further stalking, but were unable to prevent the crime.

■Knife and towel used; stabbed multiple times in the neck and other areas

The victim was identified as Moe Harukawa (21), a part-time employee at the Pokémon Center.

A person who knew Harukawa:
"She was very polite and cheerful. Her whole family got along well. She would always run errands and help her mother carry heavy bags."

With the suspect also deceased, a full investigation into the case has become difficult. The suspect in charge of Harukawa's murder is Daiki Hirokawa (26), whose occupation and address are unknown.

A witness near the scene:
"It looked like he was causing a disturbance near the cash register. After the shutters closed, I heard screams and police officers trying to stop him inside."

Security cameras captured the crime. The man entered the store alone and headed straight for the cash register. There were about four employees behind the counter, but he attacked only Harukawa. He stabbed her multiple times in the neck and then cut his own throat, dying in the process. The knife appeared to have been wrapped in a towel and tied with something like rubber.

This was the only weapon he brought to the scene. However, it has now been discovered that a bag believed to belong to the suspect was seized from a men's restroom stall on the same floor as the Pokémon Center. A wallet containing a driver's license in Hirokawa's name was found inside.

■December last year: "Stalking consultation" with the police

The two were former lovers. They met at a fast-food restaurant in Hachioji City. The two, who were co-workers, began dating around October two years ago. Then, around July of last year, Harukawa was able to work at the Pokémon Center, which had been her dream. However, Hirokawa...

Hirokawa Daiki:
"This isn't for you, quit."

Interviews with investigators revealed that Harukawa decided to end their relationship after being told this. The trouble came to light around Christmas. A letter saying "Please contact me" and a paper bag containing Pokémon cards were left at the entrance of Harukawa's home.

On the morning of December 25th, Harukawa went to the police station...

Harukawa Moe:
"My ex-boyfriend is stalking me."

She said that he had followed her from the nearest train station and ambushed her in front of her home on multiple occasions. On the day she contacted the police, the Metropolitan Police Department, in order to ensure Harukawa's safety, had a police officer escort her home. There, they spotted Hirokawa, who was walking around the area staring intently, and apprehended him. Despite urging him to delete photos of Harukawa, Hirokawa stubbornly refused. He was also carrying a knife at this time. The Metropolitan Police Department arrested him on suspicion of violating the Stalker Regulation Law. Then Hirokawa said…

Hirokawa Daiki:
"I won't stalk her anymore. I regret it. I wanted to get back together with her."

Furthermore, a fruit knife was found in the rental car Hirokawa had been using, and he reportedly said he had been contemplating suicide.

■Released after summary indictment for "stalking"

More than a month after his arrest, the Metropolitan Police Department issued a restraining order ordering him to cease his stalking behavior. The prosecution then summarily indicted him and released Hirokawa. At that time, Hirokawa reportedly said, "I won't come near her anymore."

The Metropolitan Police Department continued to contact Harukawa regularly even after his release. Based on the Metropolitan Police Department's request, Harukawa installed security cameras at her home and stayed at a relative's house for about a month. The Metropolitan Police Department reportedly advised Harukawa to consider changing jobs, but Ms. Harukawa said…

Harukawa Moe
"I don't want to change jobs. It was my dream to work at a Pokémon Center."

Daughter of Harukawa's classmate
"Oh really? So it was Moe-chan. My daughter also likes Pokémon."

Harukawa's middle school classmate
"I have a strong impression of her being Pikachu. I remember her wearing Pokémon plushies."

After her release, Hirokawa was staying at her parents' home in Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture. The Metropolitan Police Department had asked the suspect's mother to keep an eye on her. They had urged Hirokawa to seek counseling, but he refused.

Regarding the handling of this case, which escalated from a stalking incident to a murder case, the Metropolitan Police Department stated that they "took the best possible measures."

Very interesting and agreeable points, but how do we deal with the threat of the Eternal Korean?

this isn't a fair question when "person stabbed over pokemon" happens a lot in the states.
just randomly looking up "stabbed for pokemon cards" I get this:

my first assumption was "oh just like home!" and assumed it was another miguel taking this shit internationally.
if this isn't about pokemon cards, then this isn't a brown situation.

imagine if a headline said "man killed in fight at KFC japan."
is it THAT hard to believe some people might jump to conclusions?

He’s the type of weeb that gets his info on Japan from Xitter and 4chan. Watch his posts long enough and you’ll be able to predict how he’ll reply to any situation involving anime, Japan, and women.

Japan is more homogeneous than the US, so the perp being dark-skinned is statistically less likely, but not impossible. Pokemon was incidental to the actual event.

With a KFC, I'd certainly be curious, since it's one of those weird things in Japan that became a Christmas tradition. Black people tend to be a curiosity in Japan, so I'm not sure how likely it would be an incident involving them. Thankfully, Johnny Somali is not representative of a majority of Japan's population.

It could certainly change in the next decade or so, with the way they're importing their labor force, but I don't think they're at that point yet.

A popular Japanese streamer named Noda Zouri went to the site of the stabbing and livestreamed themselves. A random stranger who speaks intelligibly even to Japanese speakers assaults the streamer and proceeds to pee at a road intersection.

Streamer seeks help from local police branch but no help arrived. Someone called 110 (emergency number like US 911) and police arrived. Police hold down man resisting arrest. Streamer rushed to hospital.

In addition, the JPY has plummeted in value in recent years, so scalpers would probably try to take advantage of the cheaper prices in Japan.
