He has unfortunately never enjoyed prison, nor watched shows like Larry Lawton's where he explains what actually goes on in prison (and why a lot of pop culture beliefs about prison are complete bullshit). Why would anyone want to be on the top bunk? It means you have to climb up and down all the time. The top bunk is actually the bottom bitch of the two cellies.

I'm not sure whether it is correct, philosophically speaking, to say that Patrick is "getting fatter". For one to get fatter, there has to have been a previous state of less fatness. By induction, this would imply that for Patrick S. Tomlinson to have continually gotten fatter, there must have been at some point a state of minimal or even no fatness, which as we know is impossible.
