To be fair, there is a pretty popular interpretation of the Bible (dispensationalism) that argues God treats people differently in different “eras” or dispensations. I’m definitely not arguing that it’s correct, but it’s mainstream enough and convincing enough that a smoothbrain like Mel who is nevertheless trying to be earnest in their faith could fall into that belief. It's not for everyone, including myself, to study the historical phenomenons and trends in such depth, but it is important to keep a record. Being an expert on 'identity politics' of Christian denominations and doctrines isn't an action that makes that person a better Christian, but it is important for it to occur because it keeps larger, influential forces that derail people's personal journeys in check, so someone needs to do it. If that's not your calling, then it's not your calling.

The more this knowledge is ignored or not acted upon, the more people like Mel and Jer are manufactured. If that's not proof of the importance of this work, then I don't know what is.

I joined the military because I thought I was serving my country, not to intentionally fight in the war in Iraq, but willing to do what my country told me it needed. Combat is one of the worst things a person can experience, full stop. Very few people have any idea how truly awful it actually is.
