Before I dropped out, I was taught by Howard (among other lecturers) in archaeology. I found him quite eccentric, and significantly more concerned with pop-culture alongside his niche into vikings. I remember him setting an assignment for those on his module during the course that revolved around the archaeology of a fictional world, one he heavily pushed towards focusing on JRR Tolkein's Middle Earth. He was also known to, frequently, spend his time making tiktoks and focusing on his digital presence, which we as students took the piss out of him for in closed groups.

In terms of teaching, he's definitely someone with great presence and has a lot of passion, but he did start one of the first lectures we ever had with him with "who here's on the course because of Indiana Jones?". He enjoys the command and control he has, and it's clear in his online presence that he's got no qualms in making himself known.

If anyone has any questions about him, I'll do my best to answer.

This is an unfortunate plague that's prolific in the current academic archaeological circles. This is in-part due to the field-spanning focus towards post-processual archaeology that began around the 80s in the UK. There's a lot more focus on the subjective and interpretation rather than empirical evidence, with archaeologists being inclined to listen to people who claim to be proponents of culture for their explanations on certain pieces of archaeology and anthropology. However, this has its clear downsides, as it's very possible for people to make claims on cultures that they believe, deep down, to be very true even if there's empirical evidence to suggest it's not.

An example comes with the nazi-pushed idea of the Aryan race, which at the time was genuinely believed to be true by a large portion of the German population. The Ahnenerbe made significant efforts to get the idea of there being a special 'master race' into academic circles, with many studies being paid for to support this. To your average person, you can see that it was a propaganda tool devised by the nazis to reinforce a sense of innate superiority in an otherwise downtrodden German population, both to boost morale and to help sway opinions towards other races (especially Jews). The theory itself is easily dismissed as propaganda, too, however due to the existence of post-processual archaeology, there will be people out there who believe themselves as genuine Aryans of this culture, and because of this they have to be treated with credence and academic respect. If someone believes something to be an artefact of their Aryan culture, then even if we have overwhelming evidence to say otherwise, they have to be given a fair standing for this and given claim.

The worst thing you could probably do is try and snuff out his online presence. I know he wouldn't be dismissed from the University, and the department would support him even in the face of his mistakes as he's a liked person there and one of the senior lecturers.

Which...does sound rather entertaining all on it's lonesome. I could see myself writing a few pages on The Great Zandalari Empire, only to get marked down and cancelled for glorifying the racist pyramid trolls. I had a similar assignment in an introductory Theology class right out of high school.
