If I may powerlevel briefly about Doug Wilson:
I lived a significant portion of my life within the regional sphere of influence of Doug Wilson, I have known many members of his congregation, and I am familiar with his stated goals, ways of conducting business, and the kind of operation he runs. First, I'll say that his congregation has a lot of good, well meaning people in it who are generally on the defensive because of the controversial nature of Wilson and the leadership of his church.
Second, Doug Wilson is a very, very cruel, mean-spirited person who has no business giving spiritual advice to anyone. His theology is backwards and heretical, and is largely shaped by his desire to be a regional theocratic monarch. But that isn't really what my issue with him is. My issue with him stems from two things, above all else.
His church has had two major incidents of child sexual abuse. This happens in most organizations where adults have access to children, and is the sad nature of how predators position themselves within society. On its own, it should not reflect on the church. However, Doug Wilson's responses to these two incidents were both beyond the pale, and he has never admitted fault or responsibility for what happened.
In the first incident, a student at the university operated by Wilson's church, New St. Andrews named Steven Sitler, was caught molesting children within the church community. He was later found to have done the same to children in a 'sister church' in his home town. As I recall, the estimated number of victims is somewhere around 15-20 pre-pubescent children. When this came to light, Wilson personally negotiated his surrender with the police, and later wrote a letter to the judge asking for leniency. Sitler served a pitiful sentence, got a sweetheart deal including non-prosecution for most of the children he had abused, unless they were willing to testify against him. After his sentence, Wilson helped arrange a marriage between Sitler and a member of another sister church. At the wedding, he openly prayed for a fruitful marriage and children, knowing that a judge had to give Sitler permission to get marriage, on the condition that he never have any children. Not long after, Sitler and his wife had a child. Sitler then admitted to having sexual thoughts about his child and was permanently removed from the home. Wilson repeatedly showed a lack of judgment here, advocated on behalf of a terrible sex offender, and later directly contributed to conditions that brought about a child being raised without a father.
In the second incident, another student at Wilson's seminary, Jamin Wight, repeatedly raped a 14-15 year old girl who's family he was living with during his education. Wilson once again advocated on behalf of the abuser, who essentially faced a short jail sentence and probation, no sex offender registry, very few consequences. Wilson blamed the father of the girl for not realizing what was happening, and pressured the family to sell their business as relations with the church became strained. Eventually, the family broke apart and the girl left town. She later wrote a piece critical of Wilson, the church, and what had happened to her. Wilson responded by called her a Jezebel, implying she is a whore, and by digging up her husband's master's art project where he is naked in a jail cell hitting a wall with rebar, to say that "she is married to a freak, she doesn't know anything about what a real marriage is supposed to be."
In both of these situations, Wilson did not inform the congregation of what happened until after the court cases settled, potentially preventing parents from investigating if their own children had been predated upon by these men.
While those two incidents, and Wilson's handling of them, should be enough to dismiss him as a spiritual leader, or someone anyone should listen to at all, it is the second issue I have with him that perplexes me as to how he has gotten so influential:
He is incredibly impotent. He is the leader of the biggest religious organization in the region, with direct control over a half dozen churches, a seminary, a university, and a k-12 school. He has national attention, and has been mentioned in a positive light by Trump, Hegseth, Tucker Carlson, Charlie Kirk, and many of the zionist right. Despite all of this, his group has completely failed to affect political change in Moscow, Pullman, or even the nearby town of ~600 people, Troy. They control a lot of businesses and properties in Moscow, but all they have managed to accomplish politically is to split the right-wing vote by running their own slate of candidates, ensuring that Moscow has a permanent progressive city council, school board, etc. It fucks up the political landscape of the entire county, making Latah county one of the only purple counties in the state.
It is really concerning that someone like this, who has proven that he is incapable of leadership, has so much influence among the upper echelons of the administration. Combined with batshit insane retards like Paula White, it really makes me wonder what the fuck is going on.
