It’s coming across that old Billy is exaggerating or simply lying about “le neo-nazi’s showing up on moi book tour in large amounts” in order to grift, true meaning of, btw, not just to make money but to grift, -verb form. So, naturally it’s a gotta be a big fat lie.

Some people don't need to own a car. If your home and workplace are both in metropolitan areas, you can hire a ride for the rest of your occasional trips. Take the subway for the daily commute. It's not for me, but some people get on okay like that.

Move to the arsehole of nowhere like Labelle's done? You're going to need wheels. The shops and the hospital are a drive away, even if you 'work from home'.

A car that's certified roadworthy can cost way under €1k. It may not be roadworthy in a year or two, but it's a way of getting around. Cheap motoring for poor people.

Billy is stupid. I'll bet he's been suckered into financing a brand new Fiat 500 on a rolling contract. Probably one with a pink paintjob. He can't keep up the payments.

I highly doubt that his car is getting repossessed because we only heard about it once. Having that happen is like having your car stolen (even though you're currently stealing it from the bank). I've seen it happen to people and it completely fucks up their shit for a good long while, as it should. If Bill's car was really about to get yanked, he either would be too embarrassed to tell anybody or he would be in a full on panic offering hand jobs for a ten spot. He's trying something new to see if he gets any bites. If it worked, we'll hear about it again in September or October.

I mostly agree. This may go slightly off-topic for a moment.

I know these hire purchase companies are sharks. I've worked with a guy who was earning less and less each year, but the lease he was on kept offering him an upgrade every few years. He didn't need a smarter, newer car. They were just happy to test him for the extra £50 per month. I don't know how this story ends...

These companies put it on the leasers to regulate themselves – the driver never actually owns the car, so they still have the vehicle as collateral.
For some people HP is an affordable way to always drive a modern car. For a mug, it's just a way for companies to fleece a fool with little risk to themselves.

Labelle is the type of ladyboy who'd enter a lease for the type of car he thinks he deserves. He's ripe for the picking.

Would a man like Billy use his mechanical knowledge to secure a cheap used car with five years left in it? Or would he sign himself up to something brand new with a known monthly cost? I don't know the answer for sure.
