Canada set to surpass 100,000 assisted suicides — more than the country’s WWII death toll

Canada is set to pass a grim milestone in its medically-assisted suicide program with a total of 100,000 citizens projected to be euthanized by the government before its 10th anniversary on June 17.

The Great White North’s MAID (Medical Assistance in Dying) program will soon cross the sickly six-figure threshold, according to The National Post.

Ottawa’s most recent data shows 15,767 Canadians were euthanized by the state in 2024 — 5.1% of all deaths in the nation that year.

About 45 Canucks per day are being euthanized, according to the report.

In 2021, a total of 9,842 Canadian people were euthanized.

Only 2,000 shelter dogs in Canada were put down that year, according to The Vet Desk.

As of 2024, total MAID deaths reached 76,475 citizens, nearly twice the 42,042 of Canadians who died in battle during World War II, according to the Canadian War Museum.

New York recently adopted its own version of the controversial program, the Medical Aid in Dying Act — which religious leaders have called a “societal failing.”

“The proliferation of assisted suicide in Canada is a human tragedy and societal failing — one that New York is on track to duplicate,” said Dennis Poust of the New York State Catholic Conference and a spokesman for New York Archbishop Ronald Hicks on public policy matters.

“Canada’s program is indeed a warning, one we pointed to again and again as a harbinger of New York’s future when appealing to lawmakers and the governor,” he said. “What starts out as a ‘choice’ quickly becomes an expectation for patients, especially the poor and underinsured and people with disabilities. Tragically, this is what we can expect here.”

The controversial program has come under renewed scrutiny after reports of same-day approval for MAID applications and claims that patients were pressured to needlessly end their life while suffering from depression.

The family of 26-year-old Kiano Vafaeian are calling for reforms after their son, who had Type 1 diabetes, who suffered seasonal depression and had vision problems, was approved for the suicide procedure and euthanized on Dec. 30, 2025, in British Columbia.

“We never thought there would be a chance that any doctor would approve a 22- or 23-year-old at that time for MAID because of diabetes or blindness,” mother Margarat Marsilla, of Ontario, told Fox News Digital.

New York has become the 14th state to approve a version of doctor-assisted-suicide, with the bill passing by a narrow margin in the state Legislature last June.

If you are struggling with suicidal thoughts or are experiencing a mental health crisis and live in New York City, you can call 1-888-NYC-WELL for free and confidential crisis counseling. If you live outside the five boroughs, you can dial the 24/7 National Suicide Prevention hotline at 988 or go to SuicidePreventionLifeline.org.

Does it still count as suicide if other people do it for you?
For Christian theologists, discounting other potential sins by the 'patient' beyond this immediate issue- if they wouldnt have died by their own hand otherwise, does this still count as a suicide that would bar you from entering heaven? Or does the sin rest on the practitioners?
You can't rules lawyer God, but ultimately the choice is down to Man.

45 a day is a frightening statistic. that's as many as there are murders in the US every day and the US is like 6 times bigger and gun crazy.

We should really adjust that per capita and ask how big it would be if it was using US population.

45 Canucks a day is 40.6 per 100,000 per year. This is equivalent to 390 Americans a day, or 141,700 Americans per year. Basically a year of Chicago murders, each day.

I think Day of the Rake is officially here, and the Rake turned out to be the Canadian healthcare system.

I ain't scrolling 11 pages, however I feel you have the right to die on your own terms and shouldn't be, "we know you are going to die, we'll give you morphine until your organs fail and suffer until the end" is inhumane.

That said, MAID is absolutely ghoulish.

People who have treatable diseases, children with depression, old people, etc.

A good idea taken way too far.

I mean you can have them do it themselves, which leads to the traumatic running into trains, loved ones finding the bodies, suicide by cops, mass shootings, having the family live in the place the mentally unstable sperg ack’ed themselves stuff. Which seems more harmful to society than a clean room overseen by professionals and sent away quietly with everyone saying goodbye. 🤷‍♂️
Anyway back to church!

I am sure that was the post to change their minds. It will be all different now!
You can also plan it with loved ones in mind.

My uncle committed suicide, before he did so, he called 911 and straight up said "I'm killing myself, I'll be dead before they get here, just let them know beforehand. Here's the address." And hung up.
He had wrapped his head in a towel and used a shotgun in a bathroom to make cleanup easier.
It's sad, though he was 79 so he did have a good run, he was thorough that his family didn't see his decision. That is someone who will probably die regardless of anything.

But, he is not the rule. Studies have found that something as simple as putting your gun in a passcode safe is enough time for people to change their mind

Most suicides are not planned, the vast majority are done impulsively. It's why replacing gas ovens with electric ones saw significantly less suicides period once replaced. Most will only attempt it if it's convinient, not because they are truly suffering and wish to end it all. Someone who is that determined will do it regardless of what safety measures are in place.

You claim to be a Christian, well you're not very good at it.

If you are a Christian as you claim, you should know how valuable life is by default. To loudly proclaim otherwise is unchristian and going against the Lord.

I say this as a fucking athiest that won't shame suicides. I understand shit happens, but I still believe life is precious and should be saved when quality of life can be improved. If not and you're suffering, that's different. But the vast majority of these suicides are not lifelong torment, they are impulsive actions.
If you find life so worthless, why are you here? Why do you desire to bring down others when you won't do it yourself?

I'm not even trying to talk you into it, it seems absolutely rediculous to think the way you do and want to live.

That’s an opinion and ultimately not one I hold. Ultimately it is up to the Lord what the truth is, not 300 different denominations bickering over interpretations of scripture.

Smugmeme goes here

That is up to the individual to decide not other people to force life where life is not wanted. Hiding behind platitudes of ‘life is precious’ and ‘it’s just temporary’ is empty bullshit covering for the fact that people want to make those who don’t want to be here anymore stay and suffer, either because they can still possibly become a wage slave for the system or because they care more about the personal pain they’d feel over the loss than the pain the person wanting to die feels.

Who says I find life worthless? I just said there is no inherent value in life. It is not precious automatically. It can absolutely be worthless. Nothing you do in this world matters because it will decay and disappear as is the nature of the universe.

But that’s the point. When nothing you do matters all that matters is what you do. I am Christian not because I think if I do XYZ I will get to go to Heaven, I am Christian because I find joy in the Word and Love in Christ Jesus.
But if an atheist comes to me and saying he refuses to believe, you would expect me to force him to have faith or tell him to fuck off and ostracize him? No, I will embrace him, and accept his choice and do what I can to at least make his journey easier.
