My personal opinion is that "natalism" (or "pronatalism", as some call it) is an incredibly stupid belief system which is completely at odds with the facts.

Here are the facts:
  • The global population is higher today than it has ever been at any other point in human history, and will continue to grow for several decades to come.
  • Globally, infant mortality is lower than it has ever been.
  • Resource consumption is growing at a rate which is outpacing population growth, which is going to have dire environmental consequences in the future (our oceans are already being polluted with microplastics at an alarming rate).
  • life expectancy is higher than it has ever been globally, which also presents constraints on resources.
  • Our planet has limited land and raw materials, and the idea that we can get around this problem by colonizing space is nonsensical. It simply isn't feasible with current technology.
Arrogant billionaires like Elon Musk peddle this counterfactual "pronatlist" doctrine because A) it benefits their bottom line to have growing markets with more consumers, B) their immense wealth largely shields them from the consequences of unsustainable population growth, and C) their hubris leads them to conclude that their grandstanding space missions are anything more than a self-obsessed fantasy, utterly disconnected from what is practically realistic or achievable.

My advice would be this: if you want to become a parent, do it for the right reasons. Ask yourself, would it be in the child's best interests to have you as their guardian?

Were they ever a thing? Even in medieval Europe an average age of marriage was in the 20s or what is now college-aged. Sorta like now.
