I had my reservations about part 1, mostly because I got the feeling that Fujimoto had some really great ideas at the end, and then just played as fast and loose with the rules to get to it. After a while it added up and details like the nature of Makima's death never really sat well with me. It always felt like I couldn't let those details go and let them undercut the cool aspects. This was a controversial take when part 1 ended, but I stand by it. I had decided to not really read part 2 until last year when some coworkers that kept talking about it were excited that I had read part 1 and asked me to.
I'll give the final chapter a chance, but it feels like part 2 has my problems with part 1 only exponentially more severe (and this time I don't feel like I'm in the minority). Nayuta's character and death seemed pointless, as well as all of the relationships Denji had throughout both parts. People also talk about Denji's character development yoyoing at times but this seems like it'll hard reset it.
We'll also have to see what happens in a world without the chainsaw devil if Pochita really did eat himself. I feel like there will have to be a lampshaded excuse as to why getting rid of Pochita gets rid of all of the devils, otherwise how will it work? Are the devils he ate still gone including death? Will humans just be eaten by bugs and turned into trees for eternity? Or will they come back? Is Pochita so based as to bring back the holocaust devil and let Makima rule the world? Find out next time on Dragon Ball Z
How does Firepunch compare? I hear great things from people about it and being weird and fascinating and thought provoking, but after Chainsaw Man I feel like Fujimoto has great ideas but poor execution.
