It looks to me more like he did his out of touch old man thing attacking a piece of popular media and people foolishly decided to defend it to him. Really One Piece fans shouldn't consider it a negative that Richard hates it, if anything that is a plus.

People seeing a character like this and then wondering why preachy trans folx in their comics aren't received positively, is hilariously reductive of the bigger issue. I always took Bon Clay to be loosely inspired by Dr. Frank-n-Furter of Rocky Horror Picture Show, as a larger than life character that commands every scene they are in. Their actions and how they impact the plot command more attention than identity politics.
