What is that drink supposed to be? (Not equipped to watch YT now)

It's a fruit drink, mostly orange flavoured according to Steve with herbs and vitamins. He said he could taste the very distinctive vitamin B6 in it, but it was pretty refreshing. It came in a compressed tab that effervesces in a glass of water. (like an alka-seltzer) Very compact and a good idea imo, but leave out the goddamn Chinese herbs in a Western version, please and thanks.

Since I talked shit on the Chinese, the American ration he did looks infinitely better, you can actually discern meats and greens in the rice and the whole thing looks more appetizing. The Chinese MREs are so grey it looks like he put a filter over his camera.

From dry cookie form to a bun if steamed.
I kinda do not know what word to use here ^^
It could have been just an army tale.

I think 'dehydrated' is the word you are looking for. Sublimated is what @Rick The Stick said: to change form between a solid and a gas without going through a liquid intermediate stage.

I have never heard this hot dog bun story before, but now I'm intrigued. Anyone finds anything out, post here please.

It does seem like the "Army" solution to shipping/storing hot dog buns would be to chop the 'dogs and serve them on rice or macaroni instead.

They do have those weird shelf stable hamburger buns so I suppose a hot dog bun isn't entirely out of the question. A freeze dried hot dog bun sounds absolutely foul, however. From what I've seen of "Beef Frank" MREs from the 90s they typically just gave you a packet of crackers.

It was our, early post-Soviet, army, and humanitarian help package ^^
A good chance your army got the technology down, but somebody in command got a brain and told them to dispose of that shit.

The likely did the calculations that anything worse to eat than terrible MREs and gross tray rations* would push your average grunt over the edge.

*Tray rations were where a team of cooks would come out to the field, usually for breakfast, with chafing trays of the shittiest from the lowest bidder slop food you can imagine. No I don't want tray rats. Just let me eat the good parts of an MRE and the snacks I brought with me.

Terminal Lance speaks unfiltered truth from the perspective of a Marine infantryman.

Hey now, the hot a's had some really decent gas-station-breakfast sandwich tier bacon that came in the tray next to the sausages. They also didn't give me the black shits or constipation like mre's did after a week of eating them.

Steve likely would have found the fruit soup less 'viscous' had he actually used more then half the suggested water for it.
IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE LIKE THAT! :(

edit: unrelated to this I've been eating a bunch of the freeze dried stuff, similar to Turmat that is used in the Norwegian rations. They're not as good, but Turmat(very good) is like €12 but I can get these finnish equivalents for like 4-5 euros. They're perfectly fine if you skimp a bit on the hot water.

One of the things that never fails to make me laugh is “Ohhh that smells TERRIBLE, I’m definitely not eating that. Well maybe just a little bite.. ah jeez.”

I would not doubt that they go down the "White Chicken Chunks" route and maximize the combinable foodstuffs to create a childlike version of a dish, instead.
If you throw tortillas in, you'll have the brightest creating "chili dog glizzy wraps", and it will stay in rotation for like 5 years.
To be fair, it doesn't look like it will kill you like previous Chinese MREs or that it will necessarily taste bad, but it's pure Carbs with very small amount of vegetables on the side and token amount of meat. Not really good if the soldier is in action. Also the drink looks awful with the black extract inside it, looks like bugs.
I would not be surprised if the Chinese specifically made heavy meat/dessert rations (such as the chicken wing one) that primarily get taken by "specific personnel" and then design carbslop for field exercise fodder. Definitely seems like the deal with most Chinese MREs, where I notice a massive difference in quality/thought in some menus compared to others.
