The possible blocking of a €90 billion European Union loan for Ukraine if Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz party loses the upcoming election was raised by Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico on March 8.
The remarks came in a video posted on Fico’s Facebook page, where he said Slovakia could take Hungary’s place in blocking the EU funding.

He said he plans to discuss the shutdown of the Druzhba oil pipeline during an upcoming meeting with the head of the European Commission and suggested Slovakia could offer assistance if technical work is needed on the pipeline in Ukraine.

“But the most important message will be that Slovakia is ready to take over the baton from Hungary if necessary,” Fico said.

He added that the European Union’s €90 billion loan for Ukraine is effectively blocked at the moment.

“However, I am not naive. The Ukrainian president has recently been talking about restoring supplies in a month or a month and a half. That is after the election in Hungary, where he expects the opposition to win,” Fico said.

“Then there will be no chance of oil from the east — unless someone else takes over Hungary’s role.”

“In the south of our country over roughly the past six weeks, the Armed Forces carried out a number of important actions related to defense and, in some sectors, offensive operations. The president noted that the sector remains difficult.

“But I will say this very cautiously — everyone feels more positive than they did at the end of 2025,” he added, saying the actions of Ukrainian troops disrupted Russian plans in the area.

“The main goals are the east of our country — the seizure of Donetsk and Luhansk Oblasts. In principle, their plans have not changed. Wreckage also reveals it has a diameter of 1.1 m (roughly 20 percent larger than the Iskander) and a heavier warhead (perhaps weighing as much as 1000 kg). Based on Ukrainian assessments, it has a maximum range “set at up to 650 km.”

Trump isn't fully sound regarding Ukraine, but the aid to Iran is not too important. Yeah I'm hoping there is some high-profile consequences for Russia for fucking around. Maybe some of those tomahawks that were floated around previously.

But it'd be temporary. Trump still wants a counter to China. He's not willing to let Ukraine completely twist now that they are wearing suits and saying thank you, but he's not giving Russia the hardline it really needs because strength and violence is all slavs understand.

Russia's budget is sadly fixed for the rest of the year with sanctions relief. If only Europe had its own wells and refineries.

Russia as a counter to China won't happen. Obviously, Russia is very dependent on China for oil sales and drone and other parts, but there's a basic problem. A democratic polity like the US cannot be relied upon to hold fixedly to a foreign policy in the way an autocracy can. Now there examples of bipartisan foreign policy through the Cold War, but that could fail. For instance Nixon negotiated a decent peace with the Paris Peace Accords of 1973, but Democrat controlled Congress refused to continue aid to South Vietnam. Anyhow, it requires bipartisan US foreign policy and Russia both become economically stronger and rejecting an autocrat neighbor with a reliable record.

Europe indeed has its own oil and natural gas and nearly all the North Sea countries with oil interests bar the UK are permitting new exploration and development. Now if only Germany could frack on a large scale. There's also continued stupidity like buying all Russia's LNG in advance. There's other gas exporters like Norway or Algeria, but likely the Russia gas was cheap as chips. I hope at least the EU can manage to send Ukraine more money than Russia. They managed it recently, but it's looking shaky.

When people say countries that are not too powerful but geographically strategic (like the sinkies) should play neutral to reap benefits from both sides, they tend to not mean this.

Interesting summary of an interview with the Chief Designer at Fire Point, the company that manufactures the Flamingo. Publicly stating you're designing a missile for the express purpose of penetrating Moscow's air defences is pretty ballsy, even if they're likely talking about hitting the wider Oblast rather than the city itself, which is my guess. I do also find that last point kinda funny given FP are under investigation by Ukraine's anti-corruption bureau for the same sort of shit.
