From the perspective of the politicians who went against Ford on the matter, it's fair to say that by 1975 (two years after the Paris Peace Accords), the Vietnam War and anything related to it was political poison at the time. The story is a good example though of how Congress can hamstring the President, for better and for worse, in foreign policy matters even if promises and commitments were made to allies by previous administrations.

It's just crazy to me that they started a fucking unpopular war and then left all those South Vietnamese people holding the bag to be executed or sent to concentration camps out of spite.

It was LBJ's war. All of those people had to pay the price and all of those soldiers had to die, both ARVN and Americans for no fucking reason.
All he wanted to do in 75 was send them enough money to sustain themselves to be able to at least pull through and not be completely conquered. America was getting out either way. They lost and by extension we lost because they ran out of money.
He only asked them for a billion dollars for emergency aid for those people.
Adjusted for inflation that's $6 billion today. They shut down our government because they wanted $405 billion for fucking obamacare. We spent 1.2 TRILLION on fucking welfare in 2025 alone.
They voted against the equivalent of $6 billion to keep men and WOMEN AND CHILDREN alive. Over a fucking war THEY got us involved in.
They didn't do it because we couldn't afford it, and they sure as hell didn't do it because it would have been a bad look and they were worried about being reelected. Leaving people whose country we completely fucked up the equivalent of a cup of coffee to the American budget to save lives and so that they could rebuild would be seen as humanitarian aid and I don't think anybody would have really cared, so long as we pulled our troops out. They did it to fuck over Ford and the Republicans. The only thing they care about is being vindictive. It's all they've ever cared about.
I say it all the time and I'll say it again, there is no amount of hate for the loony left that is sufficient.

The roman republic was gay af. Nero even married men for the first time to mock Christians while committing his genocide knows as the fires of Rome. It wasn't until the Holy Roman Empire or when Rome adopted Christianity, that Rome was less gay. The fact some philosophers weren't happy with it doesn't mean gay people weren't common. In fact it implies the opposite. Why would philosophers target a group that barely existed. What you find is that unhappiness with gay people implies a proportional group of gay people to be unhappy at. So with the level of antigay Roman philosophers. This implies that the gay population of Rome was around NYC levels per capita. So they weren't just gay. They were New York Pride gay.
