I don’t think she’s capable of feeling for others
 
While I do enjoy a bit of theorycrafting, I don't think the inclusion of NAL changed too much. Josh's decline is a sad and terrible decline, starting all the way back at when he got kicked out of Job Corps if you ask me. It's a staircase the BOY fell down:
  1. Kicked out of Job Corps
  2. Fired from Wendy's
  3. Swatted + Realized he could make more money doing nothing
  4. Pandemic
  5. Evicted(1st time)
  6. Duster
  7. Hurricane Jessica
  8. Eviction(slight return)
  9. Ozzy's death
Each event was a step down from the last, underlined by his tooth decay. I've said it before, it wasn't a matter of if, but when. The only difference is that the second eviction meant he trusted everyone even less, never mind that he was even further away from all of his Homeboys.

I think acting like this is an inevitable downfall feels like an attempt to absolve the trolls of their actions which contributed massively to the downfall.

I'm not downplaying the fact that what the trolls did was bad, and there are several major things that happened(Namely the SWATting and Josh getting fired from Wendy's) that he had no say in. But quite a lot of his actions also subsequently harmed him, like the whole NAL debacle, and perhaps most infamously post-SWATting when he realized he could make money selling the occasional painted twig.

Well no shit. Nobody's going to romanticize the fact that he decided to smoke, ate pure shit, did duster, and became a huge alcoholic. But honestly- seeing how his phone was always blowing up in the few candid not-Josh videos? I can't personally imagine that hell he lived in- and I'm not talking about cat food big macs, I'm talking about weens abusing him every hour of the day.

Nobody's going to excuse Josh for what he did to himself- but if he was wasn't fucked with constantly, he might not be dead right now.

I’m realizing my post came off more accusatory than I intended. I was more pointing out that it wasn’t an inevitable downfall so much as a very deliberately orchestrated one by the trolls who fucked with everything he had going well in his life, then sending him that which would eventually end his life.

personally i still blame the trolls for a majority of his downfall. they are the reason he kept getting evicted they are the ones who got him kicked out of all the bars and stores they are the ones who got him into duster and kept sending him alcohol when he had no money. they are even the reason NAL was able to fly to casper to torment him over and over. they pushed him to become more and more reclusive until it was too late.

that being said there are things that were his fault as well. he refused to change his phone number so trolls just kept calling him constantly. he was also very lazy and never bothered getting his bike fixed that we know of and of course that laziness also resulted in a lack of wands getting made. he also refused to go to the dentist or take care of his teeth in general and i cant really confirm it but sometimes i wonder if one of the reasons he drank so much aside from alcoholism was because his mouth hurt almost non stop unless he was drunk.

there are obviously things he could have done to help himself but he was far too stubborn and far too much of a mush brained boglim. if you took the trolls away entirely and just left cobes to his own devices i think he would have had a similar fate but it would have taken way longer. though i also wonder if without the trolls he would have been more willing to ask clint for help when he needed it. maybe even being more willing to go to the dentist.

That is the only part of your statement I'd rate optimistic. Cobes was where he was because of his decisions and ODD. Clint mentioned how Josh locked him out of the apartments after a spat- granted, this was later in the era- but still first apartment as memory serves.

If he was fucked with less, I think he probably could have just had his meager little existence and possibly survived to a ripe age. He'd never thrive, but he could certainly have made it longer than he had. Between the booze, duster, and food that rats wouldn't eat- I can't imagine that he lasted as long as he did.

Being that it came back as a heart attack and no misadventure, I'm just going to believe that he was stone cold sober and his system gave out.
 
No matter what scenario you create for Cobes in the past, you'd still be contending with Cobes and his ODD.

I have a (conspiracy) theory about this. Both Cobes and Homeboy Aaron were intimate with her; both died not long thereafter. NAL is literal poison like that bitch in Ninja Scroll.
 
Getting kicked out of Job Corps is the only thing in that list that was primarily of his own doing. What is missing from the list is the breakup with Stephanie, which was also his own fault.

Even if he was never discovered by the Internet I agree he likely would have still ended up a shut-in alcoholic. He lacked a strong male role model that was not fictional, that interacted with him regularly and without ulterior motive that actually taught him a skill, work ethic, and how putting in a few hours of labour will get you the things you want. Instead of being handed those things and never have any responsibility for his failures and only face repercussions when things got so bad a 3rd party had to intervene, like a landlord.
 
I just miss him. In a world of sickos, rapists, and women-beating freaks, he was just a weird lil guy doin his own thang. Y'know what I'm saying toobz?

Eh, I would argue it was her fault. I still do not believe the cheating story, which he only brought up in response to her telling Josh she cheated on him. Now, technically her original story for cheating was because she wanted to be butt fucked and Josh thought that was super gay. So if you think about it in that context I suppose it his fault though I imagine she would have ended up butt fucked by Cobes "friend" regardless.

I agree he may have been a shut in alcoholic to some extent in his life regardless, but I don’t think he’d have had the means or time to drink himself to such an early grave.
 
There is a sad irony here: had his new address been leaked, he could have been saved. I accept this is :optimistic:, but his heart attack (had he survived) could have been the wake up call that Cobes Clint needed to force Cobes into hospital and rehab.
