I knew a guy who was part of an intelligence unit. They interviewed a lot of captured "higher level" militia guys and were in charge of interviewing groups that wanted to switch sides to the US/Transitional Government.

I also talked to a number of Iraqis.

Now, full disclosure:
I didn't talk to hardly any Sunnis and those who I did talk to were very solidly "fuck Saddam and Ba'athism, USA #1 for stopping the Shiites from genocidign us, I also hate the inbred retards who keep trying to blow up the Americans".
So in the early days of the occupation there was a lot of Saddam loyalists running the insurgency, but it spread beyond them to the Shiites run by Iran, adn that was where the long term problems lie; the Sunnis switched sides in the late aughts, my brain has polished off the reasons but they boiled down to "Working with the Americans gets a us a better seat at the table, if we don't do that now the Shiites will skullfuck us to death after the US leaves".


The Iraqis had three major issues with the US occupation.

First, that the US was Christian nation and it was much haram for them to conquer Muslims. There was a lot of retarded cousin-fucking "logic" to try to explain this as it was against the words of sand-shtting pedophile from 1500 years ago, but basically:
"If a muslim nation conquered the US, the first thing we would have to do is force as many of your people to convert to Islam as possible, but especially your leadership- they would all have to be muslims. We just assume/assumed the US will do the same to us."
If the US had gotten Turkey or Indonesia to run the occupying force, there would have been fewer issues - or at least they'd have had to scheme up new excuses for why they are chimping.
This is really sort of funny given what I'll get into with point 3, but expecting any sort of logical consistency from a Muslim, let alone an inbred carpet jockey, is a losing proposition.

Second, and this was actually biggest one though they all tried to play up the religious angle: US troops kept trying to keep the Iraqis from killing each other and establishing their own fiefdoms. One of the Militia leaders who switched sides on the approach to the final turn over said, basically, he would have been happy to live under US occupied Iraq had either the US killed all the Sunnis or let the Shiites do it. He resistance to the US occupation was based on one of his subcommanders getting ventilated after attacking "the home of a ba'athist" (Read: he and guys shot up a home of a Sunni family and very likely were in the process of entering to kill and rape everyone inside), and then having to continue a retarded cycle of "Attack colatition troops because his guys were killed and he had to under Islam*-> more of his guys would be killed -> attack coalition troops because his guys were killed and he had to under Islam*". One of the city elders (haivng been paid) sat him down and basically brow beat him with Koran verses to agree that since the US troops were leaving and the goverment was now muslim, he and his men had no Islam-justifiable reason to keep being a terrorist; he just had to accept that he couldn't genocide the Sunnis now that Crusader government was no more.

*This is not due to islam, its retated Iraqi cultural customs.

There was some other guy in prison who was a miltia leader for soem town and just completely 100% out for personal gain. I guess he turned song bird because they agreed to give his son a visa to study in the UK or something, and some money. Anyway, he made zero qualms that he organized his Shiite group who were against Saddam and tried to run their own little Caliphate post-invasion simply becasue he could tax everyone, fuck some guy's daughter becasue he couldn't pay protection, and basically hooked up with Iranian-run elements solely because he wanted to be a petty King of this town. If the US had left him alone to run his own little fucked up one-village kingdom, he wouldn't have ever had cause to have his guys plant IEDs for a larger militia commander.

The third was failure to establish order after invasion and then trying to undermine the replacement order that emerged in the vacuum.
There was a common thread in nearly all the Iraqis I talked to or heard about: "We wanted you to take your soldiers and leave [Paul] Bremer". The issue with post-overthrow government was order completely broke down and there was no more universal enforcement of the rule of law.
Saddam was a violent tyrant, but mother of god the courts worked (as long as you knew someoen on the police force). A lot of older guys remembered the Pre-desert storm days when Iraq had an oppressive-but-structured society. That had fallen away a lot after 1991, but while you had to be concerned about being branded an enemy of the state, in general you could still trust the courts and bribes to the police were reasonable.
Post occupation all that broke down. The US troops were enforcing order but they were enforcing order inconsistently, generally not enforcing, and when enforcing the consquences were extremely severe.

The closest thing I can think of is Imagine if the local cops were all replaced by jeets would just straight up not enforce any traffic laws. Speeding, drifting lanes, going the wrong way, running stop signs and red lights, they just sat there and watched. IF there was an accident they just told both parties to move their vehicles and go home -if there was serious injury or fatality oh well, clear the street.
But, you were pulled over and found you to be even the tiniest bit DUI, they would summarily execute you right there in the street. If you blew, the minute the breathalyzer beeped, you were dead.
And of course they didn't obey any traffic laws either.

If the US had shown up with 500,000 police officers and 20,000 judges and just said "Iraq now operates on US civil and criminal law", the occupation would have gone a lot smoother - mostly. The Sunni middle was fucked up for a long time with butt-hurt ba'athists until they started to realize that the US was what was keeping them from being genocided by the Shiites and then a lot of Sunnis - at leat on the surface - switched sides once they started to see the US forces going after Shiites who were killing them.
