Kuwait's legal citizens are outnumbered by their "foreign nationals" 4:1. They never got the memo that slavery was supposed to end. Or maybe they did and read it as "call it kafala now".

It's not chattel slavery and maybe "indentured servitude" is slightly closer, but when you can't quit your job without your employer's permission, have to live where your employer tells you, get kicked out of the country without the money you're promised if you complain, it's damn close.

Most of these countries around the USA that are tripping over themselves to be its allies, are doing so because the ruling regimes are kept in power by said USA's blessing. If this war takes and there are signs that it might, then there's a whole lot of shakiness in the system that could start to go. This could be the start of the regional war that drags in the USA even more than Iraq did.

Iraq, incidentally, being more than 50% Shia. I.e. the group that Israel just assassinated one of their most senior religious leaders.

(technically the US base near the Erbil airport in Iraq also hosts german troops)
