Yeah, that would happen if they just killed the Ayatollah. But if you kill everyone else below the Ayatollah it's highly unlikely they'll find somebody. That's why the first strikes were just taking out the organs of government. How are you supposed to put someone in power when the only institution that you recognize ceases to literally exist? Not necessarily but they can have people around him that influence him in whatever way they want or they have financial ways of controlling him - or they just got him to agree and sign on with their ideology and plans with future promises.

They could replace the Ayatollah with another one (I'm sure there's a succession all laid out) but it might come down internally on whether the Iranian population want to do the exact same thing they've been doing for the past 50-60 years for another 50-60 years or they try and do something new. The guys who replace the Ayatollah or the new Ayatollah might gauge the temperature of the people and actually change course. Having America on-side, with sanctions lifted, now able to invest billions into your infrastructure and economy might soothe the heartache of having to tolerate Israel or something.
