They effectively own/control it and can tell vessels they cannot go through it. These are not military ships, they are merchant ships and they will follow whatever instruction they are given - if they don't then they can get attacked and arrested (especially in a matter of state security).

It's like visiting an embassy with your car/whatever, if the guard at the gate says "fuck off we're closed" you do not get to drive through the embassy gates and demand your appointment, you will be shot.

Again - these are not military ships, they are giant fucking oil/gas/container ships that move extremely slowly and take like a full hour to fully stop. They do not have armor or defenses against any form of military attack. They're the equivalent of a public bus.

For decades, the Iranian regime has threatened the region by telling them that if they are attacked, they will bomb the Arabs. Sort of a you deal with America thus your also in our crosshairs.

It's a mixture of that and them actually targeting civilian infrastructure. The Iranians have no qualms bombing civilian sites. Their proxies do it all the time and they routinely use civilian sites because they know that the West will hesitate to bomb it because of optics.

Their strategy is to inflict enough collateral damage that the Arab nations will force (by bitching and moaning) The Americans to stop their bombing campaign and to tell the Israelis to also stop their bombing campaign. This won't happen. Even if they succeed in telling one or two nations to get the Americans to stop. We have enough assets in the region that it doesn't fucking matter. Furthermore, the Israelis don't care.

I see your point but if the embassy has been blown up and the guards get shot if they leave their little hut their ability to secure the gate is somewhat diminished.

That would break the nuclear taboo.

I could sperg for several paragraphs why this is a bad thing, but the short answer and biggest reason is America isn't the only country with nukes and America doesn't want to set the precedent that nukes can or should be used offensively while removing the "I have nukes for my survival" defense.

i.e. if America nukes Iran then it encourages Putin to nuke Ukraine, etc. AND may possibly one day encourage a conventional enemy attack on nuclear weapons infrastructure.

A combination of hitting ships, mining the straight, and using fast attack boats.

When I say fast attack boats think world war II style PT boats. Where they're fast surface ships that have like missile, launchers and torpedo launchers and a lot of equipment on it.

Before anyone bitches and moans about energy, this is important to realize. The United States is a net exporter of energy. This is due to the shale revolution. We are energy independent. The people who rely on Middle Eastern oil are the Europeans and the Asians. So yeah their gas price might increase but fuck them. But realistically any decrease in oil production from the region. Can just be supplanted by increasing our production. When the Russians turn to spig it off to Europe, they just started importing American oil.
