I think what it comes down to is that a lot of human learning is is time-sensitive. Too many kids are not exposed to reading when they ought to and then, when they're older and that time window has passed, they struggle. I don't disagree that dyslexia gets diagnosed to cover for bad parenting, bad schooling, and general laziness, and the overall diagnosis for dyslexia is loose (likely on purpose for reasons of money), but some people do seem to struggle with reading and/or spelling beyond bullshit excuses. Gavin probably sucked at reading and coasted his whole life because he's wealthy.

It's worth mentioning that widespread literacy is a new phenomenon in human history. Human literacy as it relates to human biology is probably not understood as well as people might think. However, there is a reason feral children - even with extensive intervention - never become fully functional. That probably also relates to overall language acquisition, but I've met people with "dyslexia" who just need to try harder and I've also met full grown adults who have tried really hard to fix their shit and still struggle.

That said, I wouldn't be surprised if you know more about studies on feral children than I do. All I'm saying is I think that there is something about some people's brains where reading and/or spelling is harder for them.

I always thought that dyslexia was one of those things that doesn't quite exist as most people think it does just because writing is something that we make up.
