This isn't talked about enough, but Gavin Newson apparently has severe dyslexia and is functionally illiterate. Everything is dictated to him. I didn't even know about this until someone in this thread pointed it out. It's not his fault and dyslexia is a legitimate disorder, but how the fuck is this guy gonna be president if he cannot read?
Dyslexia isn't a real disorder.
It literally just means "can't read good."
You have probably heard people say "oh, dyslexics see transposed/reversed letters" and all these other things. No. This is bullshit. A few of them say they do, but that's not what "dyslexia" is. It would be like saying "autism = Rain Man." Yeah there are a few Rain Man autists but that's not even close to how the disorder is defined and diagnosed in most people.
All dyslexia means is
difficulty reading that persists beyond 6 months in duration and isn't explained by sensory issues (e.g. visual disabilities, you're not dyslexic if you're blind!). Even the name dyslexia just means bad reading.
It doesn't mean anything more than that. Yes, some dyslexics can have those things you've heard about. Others just don't enjoy reading and don't care to do it, and refuse to work hard at it to get better. Both are lumped into the same diagnostic category. A huge percentage of "dyslexia" diagnoses are just because it secures more funding and accommodations, pleasing both administration and parent audiences. Plus if your kid is struggling with school, having a diagnosis to blame it on works great to keep your standing up among your peers, especially since the "dyslexics have a specific disorder with specific traits like reversing letters" myth refuses to die for the last several decades.
Back in the 80s the letter reversal thing was promoted a lot because some researchers basically thought they'd found "the cause" of slow reading. They had not; it was just one issue among the many, many factors that can make a child's reading ability lag.
The absolute most insane part of the dyslexia diagnosis is that in spite of the fact that receiving the diagnosis requires being significantly behind in reading abilities, they claim it's lifelong even if you no longer would qualify for a new diagnosis. So even for the many, many children who become fluent readers after a period of dyslexia, they now "have dyslexia" for life. No one will admit recovery is possible even when they claim these kids can become fully functional. Much like the "you're just MASKING" idea for people who learn to behave more socially normally after exhibiting autistic traits as kids, dyslexia is totally a lifelong neurobiological condition, even though there are zero neurological tests that can diagnose it...some dyslexic individuals show less activation in specific regions of the brain, but not even close to all, and this could be caused by simply not practicing enough as well.
Dyslexia is not what you've been told it is. Gavin Newsom is just illiterate.
